San Diego native Duran Ferree (19) is set to make his first MLS start this Saturday as San Diego FC faces CF Montréal.

The moment marks another milestone for both the club and the young goalkeeper. In December 2023, Ferree became San Diego FC’s historic inaugural signing, a symbolic move that connected the expansion side to its local roots. Before joining the MLS club, Ferree developed through the ranks of San Diego Loyal SC and San Diego Surf, building his reputation as one of the region’s top prospects.

Ferree has since gained valuable experience through loan spells with Orange County SC and Danish side FC Nordsjælland, a partner club within the Right to Dream network. Internationally, he has represented the United States at the youth level, featuring in the FIFA U-17 World Cup and the Concacaf U-20 Championship — further evidence of his high ceiling.

He got his first real taste of first-team action last season during the Western Conference Final after Pablo Sisniega was shown a red card. Thrust into a high-pressure situation, Ferree delivered, making two crucial saves that showcased both his composure and potential.

Ferree’s opportunity this weekend comes as Sisniega serves a suspension following that red card. Meanwhile, CJ Dos Santos — the expected backup option — remains in return-to-play protocol after suffering a serious injury late last season.

The goalkeeper situation has become an ongoing storyline for head coach Mikey Varas. Sisniega has maintained his role while Dos Santos recovers, but Ferree’s emergence now adds another compelling layer to the competition.

For Varas, it’s a positive dilemma — quality, healthy competition at a crucial position. For Ferree, it’s a chance to seize the spotlight and further cement his place in the conversation.
