Padres Down on the Farm: July 9 (Potts homers for Amarillo/Javy Guerra returns to mound)
A five-run ninth inning secured a late win for Amarillo thanks to two walks and four hits.
The minor league affiliates for the San Diego Padres went 3-1. El Paso, Fort Wayne, and the AZL Padres 1 and 2 squads were off today.
Here is a brief recap of today’s action.
El Paso Chihuahuas (55-34 on the season)Â
The Chihuahuas were off today as the Pacific Coast League is in their All-Star Break.
Amarillo Sod Poodles Won 7-5 (43-44 on the season)
Going into the ninth inning, the Sod Poodles were losing 3-2. Kyle Lloyd had surrendered three runs after six innings of work while striking out seven, but the Sod Poodles couldn’t get enough offense other than a Hudson Potts fifth-inning solo home run and an RBI groundout from Ivan Castillo in the sixth inning. Then the ninth inning came, and the Soddie’s bats roared to life. Edward Olivares tied the game up with a sharp double and scored on the very next pitch on an Owen Miller RBI single. Peter Van Gansen‘s two-run single made the score 6-3 while A.J. Kennedy‘s RBI ground-rule double was the icing on the cake. David Bednar allowed two runs in the bottom of the inning but settled down to finish the game.

Lake Elsinore starter Seth Blair, on the other hand, pitched five innings of three-run ball on four hits while striking out four. One of the runs came in the first inning when rehabbing outfielder AJ Pollock smacked a solo home run in the first inning. Eguy Rosario hit a leadoff double in the eighth inning, but the Storm hitters were unable to bring him home. Travis Jankowski went 0-4 with a strikeout in his second rehab start with Lake Elsinore.

Like the Sod Poodles, it took a big inning from the offense to grab the win. With the game tied at one run apiece after Jonny Homza‘s RBI single in the second inning, the Dust Devils got all the runs they needed in the sixth inning. A Carlos Ruiz double scored both Reinaldo Ilarraza and Kelvin Melean to give the Dust Devils the lead while a two-run single from Alison Quintero padded the newfound lead. Five relief pitchers to pitch four scoreless innings while striking out nine.
