San Diego Padres Affiliates were 6-2 on Tuesday night. Only the High-A Lake Elsinore Storm and Arizona Rookie League Padres 2 couldn’t pull out victories.
Here’s a recap of the day’s action:
El Paso Chihuahuas (68-52) Won 6-3
Dillon Overton made the start for El Paso, pitching a solid game, throwing six innings while allowing three earned runs and striking out two hitters. Carter Capps made his first appearance since being promoted from Lake Elsinore, throwing two shutout frames while not allowing a hit, and striking out one. Luis Urías had the strongest game on offense, with three hits, two runs scored and a walk. Francisco Mejía also played well, with two hits and a run scored, while Dusty Coleman had two hits and a run scored in the win. Allen Craig and Ty France also had two base knocks with an RBI each. The offense was good, and so was the pitching, which is sometimes all that a team needs to win.

Lake Bachar had a great start, throwing six shutout innings and only allowing five hits. Then Miguel Diaz came on in relief and struck out five hitters in three of his own scoreless frames. Hudson Potts and Michael Gettys each had two hits with a run scored and an RBI, while Buddy Reed had a hit with a run scored. Matthew Batten also had a hit and a walk in the win. Overall, a game won by great pitching — the team didn’t need to score much because of how well the arms threw on Tuesday.

Lake Elsinore Storm (58-63) Lost 13-9
The team lost a close game on Tuesday in a high-scoring affair against Rancho Cucamonga. They allowed a walk-off grand slam in the ninth inning, but the game was closely contested until then. Reggie Lawson started, only lasting 2.1 innings and giving up five earned runs on ten hits. Nick Margevicius pitched a really interesting five innings in which he allowed three earned runs, yet struck out eleven hitters and only walked one. Luis Torrens hit a three-run homer in the loss, while Edward Olivares had two RBI, and so did Nate Easley. The team hit very well, but the pitching just couldn’t get the job done on Tuesday night.

It was a really nice start for MacKenzie Gore, as he went six strong innings while only surrendering one earned run, striking out five, and walking no hitters. The bullpen then followed him by throwing three shutout innings to seal the win. On offense, the team didn’t walk even once, but their ten hits were enough to put up five runs. New shortstop Owen Miller led the charge, picking up two hits with two runs scored, while Jack Suwinski added two hits of his own, a run scored, and two RBI. Esteury Ruiz had three hits with an RBI, and stole his 40th base of the season as well.

It was a strong start for Henry Henry, as he threw six innings and only allowed one earned run, striking out four and walking none. After he left the game, the bullpen threw three shutout frames to help the team hold on for the win. The team only managed four hits on the night, but still put up four runs somehow. Dwanya Williams-Sutton had one hit with a run scored and an RBI as the most significant contributor on offense. Blake Hunt added a hit, and Tre Carter had a hit with a walk and a run scored in the team’s victory. The offense wasn’t great, but capitalized on their opponent’s errors in scoring enough to pull out the win.

AZL Padres 1 (20-24) Won 7-3
Jean Cosme made the start, throwing two shutout innings to begin the game. Then the relievers proceeded to allow a solid three runs in their next seven innings of work to help propel the team to victory. Center fielder Jawuan Harris had a hit, run scored, and two walks. Another key offensive player was Luis Almanzar, who had two hits in four at-bats, with a run scored and a walk. Jaquez Williams had the strongest performance on offense, scoring a run, and knocking in three runs during the game. Nick Gatewood had a fine game himself, adding two hits, two RBI, a walk, and a run scored. The team had nine hits, but their seven walks proved to be highly valuable in their 7-3 win over the AZL Cubs 2.

AZL Padres 2 (22-21) Lost 10-1
Padres’ 2018 first-round pick Ryan Weathers made the start for the AZL Padres 2 on Tuesday, throwing three innings while allowing three earned runs with three strikeouts. The bullpen giving up five earned runs is what really did the team in on Tuesday night, unfortunately. As a result of only getting three hits, the Padres 2 struggled to create much offense, and only scored one run. Michael Suarez knocked in that lone run, while Sean Guilbe had a hit with a walk. Another important player on offense was Mason House, who had a hit and a walk. No single player had a multi-hit game, and that hurt the team significantly on Tuesday as they fell to the AZL Giants, 10-1.

DSL Padres (31-31) Won 5-0
The pitching was fantastic for the DSL Padres on Tuesday, as they only had to pitch 6.2 innings before the game was determined as completed due to rain. Jesus Gonzalez threw six shutout innings, only allowing three hits, walking none, and striking out five. His season ERA is now down to an impressive mark of 2.25. Junior Perez had a big game hitting, with two hits, two runs scored, and a two-run homer. Juan Garcia also added a two-run homer in the win, while Bryan Torres and Brandon Valenzuela each had two-hit performances. All together, it was a strong offensive performance that backed some great work on the mound.
