The San Diego Padres signed Nick Castellanos, Griffin Canning, Ty France, Walker Buehler, and German Marquez in the last few days. These are great veteran signings, but the Padres really need to keep adding more talent before Opening Day.

World Series winners of the past few seasons possess depth on their roster.

To hoist that trophy, a team must be full of viable talent at virtually every position.

The squad must be full of talented starters, but beyond that, a successful team requires a backup plan. You need depth. In a 162-game season, a player can go down at any time. A winning organization fills its major and minor league roster with veterans who are ready to step in and perform.

For the Padres, the bench and the bottom half of the pitching staff are areas that need upgrading.

Nick Castellanos, Griffin Canning, Ty France, Walker Buehler, and German Marquez were signed this week. The Padres must keep bringing in talent.

I know what you are thinking. The roster is full.

Well, theoretically, the team may have more than the 26 men required to fill out a roster on Opening Day. But some of these guys are on minor league deals. They can easily start the season in El Paso and be utilized when needed. Injuries also happen each spring, and the Padres will not be immune to them.

A.J. Preller deserves a ton of praise for bringing in more talent than in years past.

I'd like this amount to

The Padres are beginning to build a veteran-based roster. Although there are some injury questions when it comes to the starting staff, the Padres did well in bringing in several veteran arms to compete. Motivation is huge in the game of baseball, and the roster is filled with motivated players.

One would expect the Padres to continue to add men as spring games begin later this week. By accumulating talent on the roster, the Padres are possibly positioning themselves for a major trade. Nothing is ever out of the realm of imagination when it comes to A.J. Preller in his quest for a World Championship.

Five men were added to the roster in the last 48-72 hours. The Padres will continue to find talent and role players as they build a complete roster. That is the goal of the current regime. To build a roster that is complete and can withstand any obstacle that comes its way.

By filling the roster with veteran players, the Padres can also avoid emptying the farm system further this trade season. In doing this, the purged farm system will have time to develop and grow, giving the Padres and A.J. Preller trade chips for the 2027 trade season (assuming there is a season).

Expect the Padres to sign a few more veterans. Probably on minor league deals. They could also add another bat to compete for playing time. Likely a left-handed hitting presence, as the roster is filled with right-handed talent.
