Padres Winter League Report: November 21 (Kohlwey homers again in Australia)
There are a total of four leagues in play now throughout the globe.
Here is a recap of the winter league as it pertains to San Diego Padres’ prospects.
Dominican Winter League
No games scheduled
Mexican Winter League
No players in action
Puerto Rican Winter League
Michael Gettys– (2-5) RBI, 3 K
The outfielder was not protected by the Padres and is eligible for the 40-man draft. He played rightfield on Thursday for the Indios de Mayaguez and hit in the middle of the lineup. Gettys is hitting .263 on the season. He struck out three times on Thursday as that continues to be his biggest issue moving forward.
Australian Winter League
Jonny Homza– (0-1) BB, K
Homza is playing for the Auckland Tuatara in the ABL. He walked in his first at-bat and struck out in his second. The catcher is showing some positive signs with the glove, and this is excellent exposure for the native Alaskan. Homza batted in the 8th spot in the game for Auckland.
Jarryd Dale– (0-4)
Returning to his native Australia, Dale has yet to record a hit. He went 0-for-4 on Thursday for the Melbourne Aces striking out two times. The shortstop batted last in the second game of the year for the Aces.
Jordy Barley– (0-4) Run, BB, K
Barley is in Canberra playing for the Cavalry and hit a homer in his debut late Wednesday night. It was 102 degrees in Australia at the MIT Narrabundah Ballpark. On Thursday night Barley went 0-for-4 with a run scored. He is off to a .222 start to his season in the ABL. This is great exposure for the infielder. Gabriel Arias played for the Cavalry a few years ago, and it helped him develop.
