Dylan Cease toed the rubber for the Padres on Wednesday and looked good early, but the right-handed pitcher did not get the results he wanted in the end.

“The stuff felt pretty good,” Cease said after the game. “I feel I have pitched better than the results.”

On the night, Cease racked up eight strikeouts, but he also surrendered three home runs in an 8-2 loss to Arizona.

The veteran pitcher went six innings, allowing five hits and six earned runs while walking three men in the game. His control failed him as Cease left a few pitches over the plate. “It is a bit of a head scratcher… All the good metrics are in his favor, and then he has a game like tonight,” Manager Mike Shildt said after the game.

Geraldo Perdomo took the pitcher deep in the fifth inning as he slugged a grand slam with two outs. The blast put Arizona up 6-0, and that was more than enough runs for the Snakes. ‘It was a big mistake and put it in a place that he likes it,” Shildt said.

Brandon Pfaadt pitched well for the Diamondbacks as the righty went a career-high eight innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs on 99 total pitches. He mixed speeds well and kept San Diego off balance the entire game.

The Padres were unable to string together any hits and continued to struggle with runners in scoring position. San Diego went 0-for-5 on Wednesday and is 0-for-11 in the series against Arizona.

This is an issue that will not correct itself. The Padres possess several men on the roster who are questionable major leaguers. And they are in the lineup nightly. The bench and depth of this team need to improve if the Padres plan on competing late into the season.

To make matters worse for the Padres, Jackson Merrill continues to swing a cold bat as he went 0-for-3 in the game. The center fielder should eventually figure it out and return to be a productive member of the lineup. Fernando Tatis Jr. is producing better of late, reaching base for the 11th straight game in the loss.

Gavin Sheets blasted his 14th home run of the season in the loss. His seventh inning homer went 437 feet and was recorded at 109.4 mph off the bat. He has been a godsend for the Padres in 2025. “Sheetsy got him,” Mike Shildt said after the game in his presser.

Wednesday’s game was the 40th sellout of the season for the Padres.

Arizona pulls to within one game of the .500 mark with the win. They trail the Padres by 3.5 games now for third place in the NL West.
