The San Diego State Aztecs softball team came into Friday hoping to flip the script after a rough 0-5 weekend in Fullerton.
The Aztecs were supposed to play a doubleheader against LMU, but the front end was canceled due to heavy rain messing with the field conditions.
SDSU jumped on the Lions quickly after Grace Uribe started the game with a quick 1-2-3 inning. The Aztecs scored four runs in the first and never looked back.
SDSU was led by Bella Espinoza, Cali Decker, and Grace Uribe in this game. Espinoza got on base all four times. She came up to the plate, got three base hits, and walked once. Decker had three hits herself, one driving in Espinoza in the sixth.
Uribe had two hits and a walk, along with pitching five innings. She gave up one earned run on four hits while striking out four Lions. LMU finally responded in the fourth with back-to-back extra-base hits by Arianna Jaurequi and Sakora Harvell.
Dee Dee Hernandez came in for relief in the sixth and quickly found herself in trouble after giving up a solo home run. Espinoza helped get her out of the inning with a diving grab in left to end the inning.
The Aztecs again struggled to score with the bases loaded, leaving them loaded three times. Hernandez made quick work of the Lions in the seventh, ending the game in a 6-2 Aztec win.
Tomorrow, the Aztecs will face off against Sacramento State at noon on the Mountain West Network. They will then face off against sixth-ranked UCLA at an estimated start time of 5 p.m., also on the Mountain West Network. The Aztecs will have their work cut out for them against both squads tomorrow, which will be a busy day on the Mesa.
