San Diego State lost its first conference series this past weekend against Nevada.

The Aztecs were shut down for the most part by the talented Nevada pitching staff.

SDSU was shut out in the first game of the series 1-0. Pitcher Cece Cellura went all six innings, giving up five hits and one run. Hailey McLean for the Wolfpack was the star of Thursday. McLean was fantastic in keeping the Aztecs off balance and keeping them guessing.

The Aztecs lost game two 5-2 due to a trio of homers by the Wolfpack. The Aztecs then took game three to avoid a sweep by the Wolfpack.

Every Aztec struggled mightily in the box to make good contact all weekend. A couple of times, the Aztecs were victims of some great defensive plays by the Wolfpack. Give credit to the Wolfpack coaching staff and players; they came ready to play and to prove a point. The Wolfpack proved that they are no pushovers, and the Aztecs have to bring their A-game if they want to beat them.

One player for the Aztecs who did bring her A-game was Cellura.

Cece Cellura, in 10.2 innings of work, only gave up one run, which came in the 1-0 loss to open the series. She had 10 strikeouts on the weekend, leaving the Wolfpack stunned with her ability to get swing and miss. She limited hard contact and was missing barrels all weekend long.

Grace Uribe struggled in the box this weekend, not getting on base once. Uribe did well in the circle in game three, going 3.1 innings and giving up no runs.

San Diego State now comes home for a doubleheader Wednesday, April 2, vs. Fresno State.

The Bulldogs are playing well this year, going 23-11. The Mountain West now has four schools in the Top 60 of RPI.

Nevada (38) and SDSU (39) are in the Top 40, with Fresno State and Boise State at 54 and 59, respectively. The Mountain West is top-heavy, and the Aztecs need to take control of their destiny regarding a potential auto bid. San Diego State’s road to an auto bid starts Wednesday vs. a tough Fresno State team.
