Danish soccer star Anders Dreyer is leading San Diego FC and providing the city with a franchise to adore.

The city of San Diego is starved of sports relevance.

There is no major sports title within the city limits. It pains most San Diegans to think about it.

In recent years, the growth of soccer in San Diego has been tremendous. With the San Diego Loyal and the San Diego Wave, the city first showed how supportive it could be of the world’s sport. Once Snapdragon Stadium was built and the city was given MLS rights, the city exploded with its passion for soccer.

In the first season, San Diego FC burst onto the MLS scene with instant relevance.

The club’s first game was against the defending champion, the LA Galaxy, on the road. In February of 2025, Amders Dreyer netted two goals and led SDFC to the shocking 2-0 win. Dreyer’s brace broke the Galaxy’s home winning streak and sent San Diego FC on an epic season.

The team finished first in the Western Conference, recording 63 points and 19 wins on the season.

It was stunning to witness. San Diego needed it.

Anders Dreyer led the team to their first franchise victory, and he has not looked back. After two goals against St. Louis, he has now reached 20 goals and 20 assists in MLS in just 36 games. He is the second fastest to do so in MLS ever. The fastest is Lionel Messi, who reached 20 goals and assists in just 26 games.

Just think about that for a minute and put that into perspective. Messi is widely considered one of the best to ever lace up the cleats. Dreyer is playing out of his mind right now.

Anders Dreyer is humble. When asked about the accomplishment after the match, his immediate reaction was to speak about the team,

When told that the play of the team looked easy, Dreyer chipped in quickly. “I will not say it’s easy. It’s hard work. It’s what we do every day,” Dreyer said profoundly.

The team is one complete entity. You get that sense whenever Mikey Varas or any player talks about the roster. They play together and move the ball downfield with precision that could only be utilized by a family-like unit. San Diego FC is united, and the play of the team is exciting to watch.

San Diego FC signed winger Anders Dreyer to a contract extension through the 2028-29 MLS season with an option through 2029-30. It was a no-brainer, according to San Diego FC general manager Tyler Heaps. “Extending Anders’ contract was a clear priority for us heading into this season,” said sporting director Heaps. “He was able to very quickly show his value to this team through his performances, work ethic, and commitment to the group on and off the field.”

Dreyer won the 2025 MLS Newcomer of the Year award, earned a Best XI selection, and was named an All-Star. He finished second behind Inter Miami CF superstar Lionel Messi for Landon Donovan MLS MVP honors. It was an epic year for the Danish star. Anders Dreyer is representing the city with poise and showcasing skills that are beautiful to witness.

San Diego FC has its star. The city continues to fall in love with the sport, and Anders Dreyer is a big reason why.
