This Tuesday, February 20, the USWNT officially announced that Alex Morgan will replace Mia Fishel on the USWNT W Gold Cup roster.

Fishel picked up a very serious ACL injury during a training session on February 19, and the San Diego native will unfortunately miss this tournament.

Alex Morgan was shockingly left off the initial roster, but now her veteran and superstar presence will be on this roster.

Morgan had a forgettable performance at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and will be looking to be much better in this W Gold Cup. The USWNT can use her veteran presence in the attack with a very young attacking core featuring Trinity Rodman, Jaedyn Shaw, Mallory Swanson, and Sophia Smith. Morgan, along with Lynn Williams, are now the more veteran players in the attack that will feature in this W Gold Cup.

With the addition of Morgan, there are now four San Diego Wave players on this roster, with Naomi Girma, Abby Dahlkemper, and Jaedyn Shaw also participating. Current NWSL champions Gotham FC are the team with the most players on this roster, with six.

I'd like this amount to

Morgan had a distinct role with the San Diego Wave last season, being more of a playmaker and generating scoring opportunities for her teammates. The 34-year-old striker also managed to score seven goals in the 2023 NWSL season, which led the San Diego Wave.

The San Dimas, Calif. native is at another point in her career but is more than capable of contributing a healthy amount to this USWNT roster. It is unlikely that Morgan will slot into Twila Kilgore’s starting 11 straight away, but the competition for a starting role in this attack will be highly interesting with so many top players on the squad.

The USWNT will be in play this Tuesday, February 20, against the Dominican Republic at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.
