Alejandro Guido placed on USL Championship Team of the Week
Chula Vista native earns the honor after scoring the game-winner for the Loyal against rival Phoenix
San Diego Loyal midfielder Alejandro Guido helped the team earn a 3-2 win against Phoenix Rising FC on March 26.
The Loyal saw a 2-0 lead vanish after Phoenix came back to tie it like they usually do. This isn’t the first time the Rising scored two-unanswered goals to even the match against the Loyal in Phoenix. They did this last season, but it happened in stoppage time in the 2-2 draw back on June 5, 2021.
Thanks to Guido’s spark, the Loyal found a way to leave Phoenix with three points, and Guido was a significant part of it. Six minutes after the Rising evened the score, the Chula Vista native nailed a right-footed shot into the left part of the net to stun the Rising defenders.
Team of the Week – Alejandro Guido
It was the first goal of the 2022 USL Championship season for Guido, who was also wearing the Captain’s armband for the first time in his SD Loyal career.
Yes, Guido earned TOTW honors, but his goal was not included in the Goal of the Week. His game-winner was a highlight-reel goal that is an excellent example of how to take advantage of a defensive mistake. There was just nothing Rising goalkeeper Ben Lundt could do.

The midfielder also finished his third start of the season, completing 61 of 72 passes and winning 12 of 15 duels.
Guido is no stranger to USL Championship honors. The SD native was named to the Team of the Week several times in 2021, including back-to-back weeks in October. He has been a key part of a fast start by coach Landon Donovan’s team this season.
SD Loyal is now (3-1-0, 9 points) and is preparing for its upcoming home match against El Paso Locomotive on Sunday, April 3 (2 p.m.) at Torero Stadium.
