Padres Down on the Farm: May 14 (Mazur solid in EP debut)
San Diego Padres affiliates went 1-3 on Tuesday.
Here’s a recap of the day’s action.
El Paso Chihuahuas (Lost 3-2 to Las Vegas Aviators)
Matthew Batten – (2-for-5) 2B,
Eguy Rosario – (2-for-4) HR, 2 RBI
Kevin Kopps – 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K
Adam Mazur – 6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K
Despite Adam Mazur’s quality start in his first Triple-A appearance and a strong bullpen performance, the El Paso Chihuahuas lost Tuesday night’s pitcher’s duel 3-2 against the Los Vegas Aviators. Eguy Rosario drove in both runs for El Paso, homering in the third inning and scoring Tim Locastro on a single in the fifth inning.
Mazur was sharp in his first Chihuahuas start, throwing six frames, punching out six, and allowing just two earned runs. Following Mazur, Kevin Kopps tossed a scoreless inning. Unfortunately, Las Vegas won the contest 3-2 in the ninth on a walk-off fielder’s choice; with the bases full of Aviators, Logan Davidson evaded Brett Sullivan’s tag at the plate from a ground ball to Mason McCoy’s at shortstop.
San Antonio Missions (Won 6-2 vs Corpus Christi Hooks)
Robbie Tenerowicz – (0-for-2) BB, 2 RBI
Robert Perez Jr. – (1-for-3) 2B, 3 RBI
Ripken Reyes – (1-for-4) 3B, 1 RBI
Austin Krob – 5.2 IP, 3H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
Missions Bullpen – 3.1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
Behind a strong performance from the pitching staff, the San Antonio Missions cruised to a 6-2 victory over the Corpus Christi Hooks. Despite not recording a hit, Robbie Tenerowicz drove in two runs for the missions. The first came on a bases-loaded hit by a pitch in the first inning, and the second via a bases-loaded walk. After taking the early lead, Robert Perez Jr. ripped a 3-run double to give San Antonio a 4-0 advantage. Perez Jr. later made it 5-0 on another bases-loaded walk.
However, Corpus Christi answered in the sixth frame; Houston Astros outfielder Chas McCormick, currently on the 10-day injured list and completing a rehab assignment, plated the first Hooks run on a sacrifice fly. Later in the inning, Krob allowed his second earned run on a Hooks RBI single. At the end of his line, the southpaw threw an effective 5.2 frames of two earned run baseball.
In the eighth inning, the Missions extended their lead to four runs when Ripken Reyes tripled Zach Reks home. After Krob departed, the Missions bullpen was excellent. Relievers Raul Brito, Yovanny Cruz, and Jayvien Sandridge combined zero earned runs and one hit allowed over 3.1 innings, contributing to an easy 6-2 Missions win.
Fort Wayne TinCaps (Lost 8-5 to South Bend Cubs in 11 innings)
Lucas Dunn – (1-for-4) BB, RBI Single
Kai Murphy – (0-for-4) 2 BB, RBI
Griffin Doersching – (1-for-6) RBI Single
Devin Ortiz – (1-for-3) 2 BB, RBI Single
Albert Fabian – (1-for-6) BB, 2B, RBI
Enmanuel Pinales – 4.2 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 6 K
Despite clawing back in the late innings and tying the score 4-4 in the ninth, a four-run top of the 11th inning solidified an 8-5 win for the South Bend Cubs. TinCaps starter had difficulty limiting hard contact, surrendering eight hits and four earned runs in 4.2 frames. After commanding Fort Wayne with a 4-0 lead, the TinCaps got on the board in the sixth inning with an RBI single from Lucas Dunn. Then, Kai Murphy plated Anthony Vilar on a bases-loaded walk, which cut the Cubs lead in half. After inching closer to a one-run deficit in the seventh, Devin Ortiz tied the game 4-4 in the ninth on a single that scored Homer Bush Jr.
Both sides went down scoreless in the first frame of extra innings. Unfortunately, South Bend roughed up Manuel Castro in the 11th, tagging the right-hander for four runs, three of which were earned.
The TinCaps scored one run in the bottom of the inning from Albert Fabian’s double. However, the comeback effort was not enough, as Fort Wayne fell to South Bend 8-5.
Lake Elsinore Storm (Lost 9-4 to Visalia Rawhide)
Romeo Sanabria – (2-for-4) 2B, HR, 3 RBI
Rosman Verdugo – (2-for-4) RBI Single
Fernando Sanchez – 3.2 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 6 K
After tying the score 1-1 early on, the Visalia Rawhide offense outmatched the Lake Elsinore Storm pitching and defeated the Storm 9-4. Lake Elsinore starter Fernando Sanchez, who had pitched to a stellar 1.93 ERA in 14 innings to begin the 2024 season, struggled and allowed three earned runs over 3.2 frames. Romeo Sanabria stayed hot and doubled in the first Storm run of the afternoon in the fourth inning. Later, he connected on his fifth home run, a two-run shot that scored Rosman Verdugo. Verdugo had a nice game himself, notching two hits and scoring Wyatt Hoffman on a single in the eighth.
In addition to Sanchez’s struggles, the Storm bullpen had a lot of trouble silencing the Rawhide bats, as Javier Chacon surrendered an RBI double in the fifth inning after Sanchez’s departure. However, the major damage surfaced when Johan Moreno allowed five earned runs on five hits in his two innings of work. Ultimately, the Rawhide offense overpowered the Storm en route to a 9-4 Visalia victory.
