SDSU Adds Transfer Guard Malachi Flynn from Washington State
The San Diego State men’s basketball team has quietly been building up quite the recruitment class.
They have added 6-foot-10 forward Joel Mensah and 6-foot-10 forward Nathan Mensah (no relation) from Ghana as well as receiving an oral commitment from 6-foot-6 wing Aguek Agop.
Now, they have added one of the more coveted transfers out of the Pac-12 in 6-foot-2 Washington State guard Malachi Flynn. He left Washington State after averaging 15.8 points and 4.3 assists as a sophomore.
His shooting percentage there was at a solid 41 percent, while he also made 34 percent of his three-pointers. Flynn announced his decision to transfer in late March. He attracted the attention of schools like Gonzaga and Baylor, and even took a recruiting trip to Creighton last month. It was SDSU that eventually won the recruitment process after Flynn announced the decision on Twitter.
Aztec fans will certainly remember him when they get a good look at him, as Flynn was an integral member of the Washington State team that defeated San Diego State in the Wooden Classic 93-86. He collected 23 points and shot 6-11 on his three-pointers, and had impressive showing against then No.20 Saint Mary’s, where he collected 26 points.
Despite Washington State’s poor record of 12-19, and an 11th place finish in the Pac-12, Flynn was one of the stars of the team and conference, ranking in the Top 10 in scoring (15.8), 3-point baskets (77), free-throw accuracy (84.6 percent), assists (4.3 per game), steals (1.5), and assist-turnover ratio (2.0). He was also named to the Pac-12’s all-academic second team with a 3.27 GPA.

Flynn is the second point guard to transfer to SDSU in the decade, with the first being Xavier Thames in 2010. NCAA rules state the Flynn must sit out next season and will have two more years of eligibility, but that is fine and dandy with Dutcher. Devin Watson, the current starter at point guard, will be graduating this year and Flynn is in the perfect position to step in and take over as the starter.
With the addition of Flynn, SDSU now has two more scholarships available thanks to the departures of Max Montana andĀ Montaque Gill-Caesar. They will have three available if Jalen McDaniels does proceed to the NBA after declaring for the draft, but not hiring an agent. The Aztecs are still pursuing other players, but are starting to build quite the basketball roster for the upcoming season.
