San Diego State softball went on the road against Colorado State this past weekend to face them in a two-game set.
The Aztecs were hoping to take both games after splitting a series with Fresno State earlier in the week.
SDSU lost the first game against Colorado State, ending that hope early with a score of 2-1. San Diego State then came out of the gates in the second game, adding on early, eventually winning 10-2 in a run-rule victory.
The first game was a matchup between the Rams ace Reagan Wick and Dee Dee Hernandez.
The Aztecs were getting on base and hitting the ball hard against Wick. They just couldn’t capitalize with runners in scoring position. The Aztecs got eight hits along with two walks, averaging just over a base runner per inning. Julie Holcomb and Jade Ignacio were tremendous at the plate for the Aztecs, accounting for five of the ten times the Aztecs got on base.
Cali Decker struggled at the plate, going 0-for-4 and leaving four runners stranded. The Aztecs as a whole left eight runners on base, and it was due to some pretty outstanding plays by the Rams’ defense. The one-two punch of Hernandez and Cece Cellura worked well in Game 1 for SDSU. The Rams got their two runs off of a two-run home run by freshman Autumn Rutherford in the fourth inning. Hernandez went four innings, only giving up two, while Cellura gave up no runs.

Game 2 was much different for the Aztecs and their offense.
They continued to hit, but this time, runs came with it. Ignacio and Decker got on for Shannon Cunningham in the first inning with two outs. Cunningham ripped the ball the opposite way for a two-out triple. The scoring kept on coming for the Aztecs as they blinked and were up 5-0 very quickly.
The Rams responded against Aztec starter Grace Uribe, getting two back in the bottom half of the third. The Aztecs then quickly answered with a five-run fourth, capped off by a Uribe three-run home run. Uribe did her best Ohtani impression with her terrific five innings of work and her three-run shot to blow the game open. Every Aztec starter got at least one hit vs the Rams in game two, potentially sparking a momentum builder down the stretch of conference play.

San Diego State now gets a little bit of a break with UNLV on the docket for a three-game series this weekend.
The Aztecs Mountain West regular season championship hopes are still in reach. The Aztecs would need a lot of help from this point on. They can only afford to lose a minimum of two of their final nine conference games to remain in contention. If a squad can do it, it is this one that coach Stacey Nuveman-Deniz built.
