El Paso Chihuahuas – Suspended 1-1 vs Round Rock

El Paso’s game against Round Rock was suspended in the second inning due to inclement weather. Before the suspension, Pablo Reyes drove in the Chihuahuas’ first run of the game with an RBI single, scoring Jase Bowen. Triston McKenzie allowed one run in 1.2 innings, walking three batters. The game will be resumed on Sunday, April 19.

San Antonio Missions (Lost 8-2 vs Midland) (4-10 on the season)

Leandro Cedeño – 2-for-4, Two-Run Double

Ryan Jackson – 2-for-4, Two Singles, Run Scored

Luis Gutierrez – 3 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 2 K (59 pitches – 36 strikes)

San Antonio’s lineup was shut down by RockHounds starter Chen Zhong-Au Zhuang, who held them to five hits and no runs in 5.2 innings. The Missions’ lineup was led by the duo of Ryan Jackson and Leandro Cedeno, each finishing with two hits. Cedeño accounted for the Missions’ two RBI with a two-run double against Midland reliever CD Pelham. Cedeño now has a .438 on-base percentage in his brief four-game sample with the Missions thus far. Ryan Jackson hit two singles and scored on the Cedeño double. Carson Tucker went 1-for-4 with a single and a run scored, and Ethan Salas finished with a single and a stolen base in the loss.

Starting pitcher Luis Gutierrez pitched three innings, allowing four earned runs. The left-hander struggled to locate his pitches in the first inning, as he plunked Leo De Vries and allowed a two-run double to Brennan Milone. Gutierrez managed to get seven whiffs on 27 swings for a 26% whiff rate. The left-hander labored through three innings, with only the second inning being a 1-2-3 frame. Johan Moreno allowed two home runs in two innings of work, not recording a strikeout but picking up seven whiffs on 19 swings. Andrew Moore threw two scoreless innings with three strikeouts, and Sadrac Franco allowed two runs on three stolen bases, despite allowing no hits.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Lost 16-9 vs Lake County) (5-9 on the season)

Alex McCoy – 2-for-5, Two Doubles, Two RBI

Rosman Verdugo – 2-for-4, Two-Run Home Run, Three Runs Scored

Jamie Hitt – 2.1 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 2 BB, 2 K (58 pitches – 30 strikes)

The Captains and TinCaps were tied at 8-8 after four innings before the game got away from the TinCaps’ bullpen, ending in a 16-9 final. Left-hander Jamie Hitt made his second TinCaps start, but the results were not the same as his first. Hitt was charged with six runs over 2.1 innings, striking out just two. The left-hander saw the first five batters he faced reach base, with four coming around to score. Hitt was charged with two more runs in the third inning, and Luis German allowed three singles and two walks in 0.2 innings. German was charged with two runs.

Clark Candiotti pitched better than the final line, as he was charged with three runs on five hits in 1.1 innings of relief. Candiotti’s outing was characterized by weak contact, finding holes in the TinCaps’ defense, though he struck out three batters. Bernard Jose pitched 2.2 innings of long relief, allowing five runs. Igor Gil was the lone TinCaps arm to pitch a scoreless outing, as he threw a scoreless eighth inning. 

The lineup was again led by Alex McCoy and Rosman Verdugo. McCoy finished 2-for-5 with two barrelled doubles and two RBI. The TinCaps’ DH continues to torch baseballs and now has a .990 OPS this season. Rosman Verdugo is getting the wheels spinning at the plate, as he finished with two hits, including his second home run of the season. Kasen Wells had a sky-assisted double in the third inning to score two runs, and he now has a .279 average to open the season. Jack Costello started at third base and finished with a double and an RBI in the game, reaching base twice.

Lake Elsinore Storm (Lost 10-1 vs Stockton) (6-8 on the season)

Jorge Quintana – 1-for-4, Double, Run Scored

Yoiber Ocopio – 1-for-4, Double, RBI

Tyler Schmitt – 3 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 2 BB, 2 K (52 pitches – 29 strikes)

Stockton got to Storm starter Tyler Schmitt in the fourth inning to take command of the game, as Lake Elsinore lost 10-1 on Saturday night. Schmitt cruised through three innings, allowing just one run on a solo home run to Myles Naylor. While the game was tied at one entering the bottom of the fourth, the inning snowballed into a six-run frame. Schmitt allowed a three-run home run to Owen Carapelloti to open the inning, giving the Ports a 4-1 lead. Two walks and a single later, Schmitt was out of the game.

Joseph Herrera entered into a bases-loaded, one-out jam but failed to escape unscathed. A sac fly, a single, and an error on a pickoff throw allowed all three inherited runners to score. Herrera allowed an RBI double in the sixth inning before being relieved by Nick Falter. Falter allowed the two inherited runners to score on a pair of base hits, but struck out three in the sixth to end the frame. Falter fanned one more in the seventh, which put the Storm staff into a conundrum. Landry Jurecka, the team’s scheduled starter for Sunday, was placed on the 7-day injured list before the game, so to preserve the bullpen, infielder Luke Cantwell made his third appearance on the mound. Cantwell threw a scoreless eighth. 

The Storm lineup was shut down by a trio of Ports pitchers. Lake Elsinore picked up five hits all game, scoring just once and going 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position. Jorge Quintana started a rally in the fourth inning with a double, and George Bilecki drew a walk behind him. Yoiber Ocopio’s first double of the season got the Storm on the board, but Conner Westenburg struck out with two on and one out. Ryan Wideman was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Bradley Frye hit into a forceout to end the inning. Frye had the team’s only stolen base of the game. Justin DeCriscio went 1-for-4 with a single, making his first start in left field this season.
