San Diego Padres affiliates were 0-3 on Thursday. Fort Wayne was rained out once again on Thursday.

Here is a recap of the day’s events.

El Paso Chihuahuas (Lost 10-9 to Sacramento) (6-6 on the season) 

Graham Pauley– (2-for-4) 2 HR, 6 RBIs, 3 Runs, BB

Matt Batten- (1-for-3) Run, 2 BB

Nate Mondou-(1-for-4) 3B, 2 RBIs, BB

Ryan Carpenter– 5 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 2 BB (79 pitches- 51 strikes)

The Chihuahuas dropped a game in Northern California despite Graham Pauley’s huge night with the bat. Pauley slugged his first Triple-A homer, a grand slam, in the second inning. He followed that up with a two-run shot in the sixth inning. Pauley will be up eventually with the Padres again. Games like this will only expedite the process. Nate Mondou tripled and drove in a pair in the loss. Matt Batten walked twice and scored a run. Every El Paso starter recorded a hit in the game except for shortstop Matt McCoy, who went 0-for-4 with a strikeout.

Veteran Ryan Carpenter started the game and was ineffective, surrendering five runs and five hits in five innings pitched. Sean Reynolds, Matt Festa, and Austin Davis flowed Carpenter, and each pitcher coughed up runs. The pitching was not having it for El Paso, as the unit gave up 11 hits on the night. Ultimately, a two-run bottom of the eighth inning sealed the win for Sacramento as Davis was tagged for the loss.

San Antonio Missions (Lost 2-0 to NW Arkansas) (4-2 on the season)

Adam Mazur– 6 IP, 3 H, 4 K (52 pitches- 39 strikes)

Nathan Martorella– (2-for-4)

Woo-Suk Go– 2 IP, 3 H, ER, 3 K (32 pitches- 21 strikes)

Jakob Marsee– (1-for-4) 2B, BB, K

In the top of the 10th inning, with the automatic runner on second base, Cole Cummings got turned around on a flyball, which resulted in two bases for NW Arkansas, and that was the contest. Woo-Suk Go earned the loss as the right-hander pitched decent despite the numbers. The defense let him down in extra innings, but you still have to be concerned about Go and his inflated 6.75 ERA. Adam Mazur was solid once again on Thursday and looks capable of taking the next step in 2024. If the Padres need a spot starter, Mazur has certainly put his name into the hat.

Adam Martorella recorded two hits on the night and owns a 1.248 OPS so far this season. The 23-year-old first baseman is really showing signs of progression, and the left-handed hitter could be of value to the Padres in time. Jakob Marsee doubled in for at-bats but struck out as the tieing run with one out in the 10th inning. The Missions struck out 14 times, including going down all three times in the 10th inning. Lake Elsinore Storm (Lost 12-3 to Modesto)  (3-3 on the season)

Braedon Karpathios– (1-for-3) 2 RBIs, Run, BB, 2 K

Will Varmette– 3.1 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 3 BB, 6 K (70 pitches-42 strikes)

The Storm fell behind early in this game and were losing 5-2 after four innings. A seven-run sixth put the game out of reach as the Lake Elsinore pitching staff surrendered 12 total runs in the game to the Modesto Nuts. Will Varnette started the game and was wild, walking three batters in 3.1 innings of work. The former JC standout will need to refine his mechanics and approach if he wants to progress in the system. Harry Gustin coughed up five runs out of the pen in 1.2 innings of work. The lefty was only charged with one earned run as the Storm committed three errors in the game (two by Wyatt Hoffman).

Offensively, the Storm got two doubles from third baseman Jay Beshaers, who continues to impress this season. The right-handed hitter owns a 1.395 OPS this season. You may need to hurry if you’d like to see Breshears in Lake Elsinore. A promotion to Fort Wayne seems inevitable. Wyatt Hoffman singled twice in three at-bats, and outfielder Braedon Karpathios drove in two runs. Dillon Head was 0-for-4 and is off to a cold start this season with the Storm.
