This Monday, April 29, several reports emerged suggesting that 28-year-old Mexican winger Hirving “Chucky” Lozano is set to join San Diego FC.

Tom Bogert of The Athletic was the first to report the news, stating that the “deal is not done” and that San Diego FC is set to pay a transfer fee of around $12 million.

Rodolfo Landeros of Fox Deportes confirmed the news, as several other outlets have also now reported the news of Hirving Lozano. “Chucky” is currently serving his second stint at Dutch club PSV Eindhoven, and the Red and Whites have already secured the Eredivisie title with just three games left in the season.

Lozano has played in 21 Eredivisie games this season and has provided six goals and three assists, not being a consistent starter throughout the campaign. Before his return to PSV, the Mexican winger spent four years at Italian side Napoli, where he scored 23 goals from 2019 to 2023. Lozano was part of Napoli’s historic title-winning Serie A side in the 2022-2023 campaign, where he started 20 games.

Lozano’s personal best season in the Italian Serie A came in the 2020-2021 season, where he was able to score 11 goals and provide three assists in 32 games played. The Mexico City native enjoyed massive success at his first stint with PSV Eindhoven from 2017-2020, scoring 34 goals in two complete Eredivisie campaigns.

“Chucky” began his career in Liga MX with Pachuca, where he became a star, and his success culminated in a league title in the 2016 Clausura season. The 28-year-old attacker has been playing with the senior Mexican national soccer team since 2016 and, in that time, has become one of the biggest fan-favorites on the team. His goal in the 2018 FIFA World Cup against Germany will forever be remembered by Mexico fans and has become an iconic moment in Mexican soccer history.

Lozano has reached a bit of a stagnant point in his career and clearly needs a change, which SDFC has the potential to provide. From a marketing standpoint, San Diego FC has smashed this out of the park, and nothing suggests that Lozano will not be able to adapt to a league like MLS. Nothing is official just yet, but this has the potential to be a transfer that would greatly benefit SDFC in its inaugural MLS season.
