The San Diego Gulls took a small trip East for a weekend series against the Tucson Roadrunners.

San Diego had a shaky start before settling in later in the first period. Laurent Brossoit made a strong save early to keep San Diego within reach, but Tucson took control for most of the first period with a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal before the halfway mark.

The Roadrunners then scored the opening goal from a faceoff. The Gulls struggled to maintain possession of the puck and had difficulties entering the offensive zone cleanly. San Diego had some strong opportunities near the end of the first but was not able to find the back of the net.

Tucson kept its pace and made it difficult for San Diego to get strong chances. Although the Gulls had opportunities in the second period, difficulty passing the puck and positioning led to another scoreless period before Tucson’s Cameron Hebig made it 2-0.

The third period was make-or-break for San Diego. Down two and trying to turn the game around, the Gulls created more meaningful opportunities and outshot the Roadrunners in the period. Near the end of the third, San Diego pulled Laurent Brossoit to get back into the game. That put the game further out of reach, with Tucson’s Brandon Tanev scoring on an empty net.

Ultimately, San Diego had its opportunities, but difficulties clearing the puck and playing with speed made it difficult to get pucks on goal against Tucson’s defense.

The Gulls fall to 2–3–1–0 on the season.
