Xolos Femenil 2019 Clausura: Xolos Start Season At Home Against Pumas With New Players & Manager
Game: Xolos Femenil vs Pumas UNAM Femenil
When: Monday, Jan. 7, 2019
Where: Estadio Caliente, Tijuana, Mexico
Time: 7:00 P.M. PST
The Tijuana Xolos women’s team will start its Liga MX Femenil 2019 Clausura season this Monday as the Club Tijuana ladies host Pumas UNAM at the Estadio Caliente.
Andrea Rodebaugh left her post as Xolos Femenil’s manager to pursue a job at FIFA, and the border city team also brought in eight new players for the new season.
Gerardo Daniel Romo will now serve as Tijuana’s manager. At 36 years old, this will be the biggest job of his career. Romo has worked in Mexican soccer for a number of years now, most notably managing in Jaguares de Chiapas’ youth system.
Yesenia Uriarte, Brenda Sosa, Maria Barajas, Nathaly Martinez, Verania Ramirez, Britany Hernandez, Magdalena Zepeda, and Litzy Avila are the new additions to the Xolos women’s team. Yesenia Uriarte was the highest-profile signing as the 24-year-old midfielder previously played with Chivas Femenil, one of the best teams in the Liga MX Femenil. Five out of the eight new players (Litzy Avila, Verania Ramirez, Nathaly Martinez, Brenda Sosa, Maria Barajas) are Tijuana natives and were promoted from Xolos Femenil’s youth academy.
The Club Tijuana Ladies had a horrible 2018 Apertura season, finishing in 15th place overall and eighth in Group 1 of the Liga MX Femenil. There are two groups in the Liga MX Femenil and only the top four teams in each group make the playoffs at the end of the regular season. The border city team will have a tough time cracking the playoffs, but should be able to compete at least at home during the 2019 Clausura.
Pumas UNAM finished fourth in Group 1 of the Liga MX Femenil last season, making the playoffs and falling to Pachuca in the semifinals. The Mexico City team has been one of the best teams in Mexican women’s soccer over the past couple of years with the great leadership of manager Ileana Davila and team captain Deneva Cagigas. Xolos Femenil defeated Pumas 1-0 at the Estadio Caliente last season and will be trying to repeat that performance.
EVT predicts a 1-1 draw between both teams, a point that will serve well for the Club Tijuana ladies.
