Winter League Report: October 22 & 23 (Diaz Wins Again/Potts Homers)
Monday was a rare day where not much action took place around the globe in the winter leagues for the Padres.
Both Monday and Tuesday’s winter league report were combined as a result.
Here is a recap of both day’s action:
MONDAY, OCTOBER 22
Peoria lost 6-2 to Glendale and fell to 7-4 on the year.
Arizona Fall League
Hudson Potts– (0-4) 3 K
Potts is batting .229 on the year after suffering an 0-for-4 game on Monday. He will look to rebound on Tuesday afternoon in Peoria.
Venezuelan winter league
Rain in Venezuela
Mexican winter league
No Games on Monday
Dominican winter league
No Padres minor leaguers in action
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 23
Peoria beat Glendale 8-1 on Tuesday behind an impressive start from Miguel Diaz and a home run from Hudson Potts.
Arizona Fall League
Hudson Potts- (1-3) HR, 2 RBI, 2 Runs, 2 BB, 2 K
Potts hit his second homer of the fall, and is now hitting .237 on the year in Arizona. The third baseman has shown some defensive issues, but has played well in the league overall.
Austin Allen– (0-5) 3 K
Allen had a bad day at the plate as he went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. He is hitting .217 on the year and playing improved defense behind the plate.
Buddy Reed– (3-5) 2B, 2 Runs, CS
Reed continues to team up the desert as he is hitting .367 on the year. He started the game in right field and went 3-for-5 with a couple of runs scored.
Miguel Diaz– 4 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K (63 pitches- 40 strikes)
The Dominican right-hander is throwing well in Arizona as his ERA is at 2.45 ERA on the year and he has won two games. He is being stretched out with the possibility that he has a shot of making the team as a member of the rotation. Diaz has nasty stuff, but can get a little erratic from time to time.
Dauris Valdez– 1 IP, 2 BB (17 pitches- 7 strikes)
The big right-hander has a 3.60 ERA after throwing a scoreless inning in the desert on Tuesday.
Venezuelan winter league
No Padres minor leaguers in action
Dominican winter league
Eric Yardley– 1.1 IP, 2 K
Yardley continues to pitch well, recording a 0.00 ERA so far in a handful of appearances in the D.R.
Mexican winter league
Gerardo Reyes– 1 IP, 1 H, 1 K (13 pitches-8 strikes)
Reyes has maintained a 0.00 ERA for the Yaquis de Obregon in Mexico. He needs to be protected in the Rule 5 draft and could be an interesting option for a team looking for cheap relief positions.
