Winter League Report: January 17 (Tatis Wins Dominican League Championship, Torrens Homers)
With many of the winter league teams in the playoffs, the games are thick with tension.
Four players appeared in these games representing the San Diego Padres.
Here is a recap on how they did:
Australian League
Ryan Bollinger: 7 IP, W, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 K, 80 pitches-56 strikes
Picking up the win with a quality start was Bollinger, a recent minor league signing of the Padres who received an invitation to spring training. The lefty recently spent time with the New York Yankees before being designated for assignment and will get the chance to prove himself with San Diego.
Michael Gettys: 1-3, 2B, RBI, BB, K, 2 SB
Gettys was back in right field for the win. Batting in the cleanup spot, he drove in one of three Adelaide runs and even swiped two bases for them. If Gettys doesn’t get an invite to spring training, he will most likely start the year in Triple-A El Paso
Dominican League
Fernando Tatis Jr. 1-4, RBI, 2 K
Tatis only had one hit, but it was an important one as he drove in one of the first runs for the Estrellas on their way to winning the championship. Tatis, the MVP of the playoff semi-finals, is well on his way to the starting shortstop job with the Padres.
Mexican League
No Padres appeared in the semifinal matchup in the Mexican League
Puerto Rican League
No Padres appeared in the lone game played today
Venezuelan League
Luis Torrens: 1-3, HR, RBI, R
Not one runner dared to attempt to steal on Torrens at catcher in the Venezuelan league semi-final games. Batting in the ninth spot, Torrens slapped a solo home run in the sixth inning in the victory.
