Boise State Loss Was Tough, But Aztecs Poised to Survive
The San Diego State Aztecs were 6-0 and ranked #19 going into Saturday’s contest against Boise State. They exited the contest with a record of 6-1 and out of the AP Top 25.
This was their first loss of the season, but this is not the only number to recognize from this weekend. The Aztecs announced that the attendance was 49,053 on Saturday night at SDCCU stadium. The crowd came to support the Aztecs.
The parking lot was full before the game. Marshall Faulk was signing autographs in Aztec Village, and the line of cars seemed to be a mile long to just get into the stadium. Once you entered SDCCU, you could hear the fans screaming from their seats with their red pom poms proudly shaking.
The stadium announcer started the “I believe that we will win” chant, as all the fans were jumping up and down. You could not even hear your own voice.
You may ask why was there so much energy at SDCCU Stadium on Saturday night. Well, that is because real competitive football was back in San Diego, and on a national stage.
The “One City. One Team” slogan that appears on billboards across San Diego and seen on social media actually was the perfect description of San Diego and the feelings of the fans on Saturday night.
The crowd was larger than any Chargers home game this year. Amazing. Simply amazing.
San Diego was in attendance because we are one city with one team, and that is the SDSU Aztecs.
Prior to the matchup, it felt like the result of this game was going to be a blowout Aztec victory to keep the undefeated record alive. The team was to climb up the rankings with a victory, but that was not the case.
Even with the electric crowd, it was not enough to silence the Boise State offense and defense.
The first memorable moment was a sad one, and the epitome of the night for the Aztecs. As Christian Chapman was about to get sacked by a Boise defender, he tried to flip the ball to Juan Washington, but ended up throwing it over his head. The Broncos’ defense picked it up and jogged into the end zone for an early momentum boost. It was a sloppy game all around for the Aztecs. They did not look like a ranked team at all.
The good news about the Aztecs’ new ranking is that they led all schools in the category of “others receiving votes” with 56. With that statistic and with a win this coming Saturday, as well as a loss of a ranked University, and the Aztecs could very well be right back in the Top 25. It could happen.
The Aztecs will get a chance to redeem themselves at Homecoming on Saturday night against Fresno State. It will be a tough battle and a great test for an SDSU team that is looking to feel better about themselves. The loss last Saturday night was rough, but the Aztecs will survive.
