Swedish National Sofia Jakobsson joins the San Diego Wave
On Saturday morning, the San Diego Wave announced the signing of the experienced Swedish national Sofia Jakobsson on a reported three-year deal.
Jakobsson, the 31-year-old striker, joins from German side Bayern Munich with whom she had just recently signed for on July 2, 2021, but only managed to make five appearances. Most of Jakobsson’s recent experience comes from her stint with Real Madrid. During the 2020-21 season, Jakobsson scored eight goals and added seven assists in 33 matches with Real Madrid before moving to Bayern Munich.
Jakobsson has developed quite a distinguished career not only at Real Madrid but also at many of her previous clubs. Since 2007, Jakobsson has played for nine different clubs and has been a contributing factor to each as well. Her most notable contributions came from Umeå IK, a Swedish club where she scored 18 goals in 58 appearances and Montpellier HSC, a French club where she remarkably scored 50 goals in 91 appearances.
Of the other clubs Jakobsson played for, including Östers IF, WFC Rossiyanka, Chelsea Ladies, BV Cloppenburg, CD Tacón, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich, she tallied a combined 45 goals in her total of 125 appearances.
If you aren’t quite caught up on the European women’s club soccer scene, many fans may remember Jakobsson from her extensive career with the Swedish national team, where she scored arguably one of her most memorable goals. The goal was the game-winner in the third-place match of the 2019 World Cup against England that finished 2-1.

Since making her debut for the Swedish national team in 2011, Jakobsson has played in three World Cups (Germany 2011, Canada 2015, France 2019) and two Olympic Games (London 2012, Rio 2016) and currently has a total of 23 goals in her 128 appearances for Sweden.
With the signing of Jakobsson, Wave FC head coach Casey Stoney will look to show an attacking prowess once the season starts, as Jakobsson joins the list of notable strikers at the club alongside superstar Alex Morgan.
“Sofia is a natural goal scorer and a proven winner at the highest levels of the game,” Stoney said. “She’ll bring yet another scoring threat to Wave FC’s attack. Sofia’s addition shows our desire to continue to develop an attacking team built on strong foundations. I am looking forward to working with Sofia to see what we can achieve.”
As the start of the NWSL season nears in March, there is no doubt that we’ll see plenty of action from Wave FC’s new attacking options. As Wave FC’s inaugural season approaches, they will need to add plenty more signings to their side, which lacks depth in the midfield.
Only time will tell how good this Wave FC side will become, but the signing of Sofia Jakobsson is a step in the right direction.
