SDSU Aztecs Embarrassed at Home by Fresno State Bulldogs 27-3
After last week’s debacle against Boise State, a lot of people were expecting the Aztecs to rebound and get back in the winning column.
But what transpired on Saturday night at SDCCU stadium was a completely different story.
On their first drive of the game, SDSU drove the ball all the way down to the Bulldogs 10 yard line, but Rashaad Penny fumbled the football, and that ended what looked like a promising drive. It would all go downhill from there for the Aztecs. On the ensuing possession, Fresno state drove to the Aztecs one yard line and running back Josh Hokit ran it in to put the Bulldogs up 7-0.
Once SDSU got the ball back, they showed signs of life and actually got a field goal out of that drive to put the score 7-3.
Unfortunately for SDSU, they wouldn’t score for the rest of the half. Fresno State added a touchdown and a field goal to get to intermission leading 17-3. Aztec fans were stunned. Nobody could believe what was going on.
When the second half kicked off, an Aztec comeback was anticipated by the more than 42,000 fans that were at SDCCU stadium, but unfortunately that wouldn’t be the case. The second half was a dreadful exhibition by the home team, as they couldn’t get anything going on offense. The defense looked completely overmatched by the Bulldogs’ offensive line as well. Fresno State scored 10 more points to put the game completely out of reach.
In the end, there are a lot of factors that contributed to this embarrassing performance. There is no denying that the injuries on the offensive line played a major role in Saturday’s ball game as QB Christian Chapman was running for his life for most of the night and only had 77 passing yards for the game. Safe to say that you won’t win many games when your starting QB has that production.
Saturday night marked the painful end to what was once a dream season for SDSU. Losing to Fresno State pretty much puts the possibility of getting to the Mountain West championship game out of reach, and also probably ends Rashaad Penny’s Heisman campaign.
There’s an old saying in football: “Never let a team beat you twice “ and there’s no doubt in my mind that the players still were thinking of their loss to Boise State when this game started. Now it’s up to coach Rocky Long to keep the team focused and try to use the rest of the season as a springboard to the 2018 season.
