This is a decisive match at Snapadragon Stadium as the Wave have the potential to finish in first place in their group with a win. However, San Diego can also be eliminated from the competition if Club America win this match, which makes for a highly competitive competition.
Club America has already defeated the San Diego Wave this year, back in the NWSL x Liga MX Summer Cup. Las Aguilas came away with a 2-0 victory and have been a very dangerous opponent in this Champions Cup. The Mexico City team is coming off a 5-0 win against Panamanian team Santa Fe and also previously defeated Vancouver Whitecaps 7-0.
Las Azulcremas are on a massive eight-game winning streak, where they have outscored their opponents 36-4. Club America is coming off a significant 5-0 win against Pachuca as the attack has been very explosive this season.
The San Diego Wave is coming off a highly disappointing 2-0 loss to last-place Houston Dash in the NWSL. To make matters worse, the game against Houston was at Snapdragon Stadium in what was an embarrassing result for San Diego.
Landon Donovan’s team is on a two-game losing streak in NWSL play and really needs to make a push in this Champions Cup. Jaedyn Shaw recently started her first game since July and her playmaking prowess was noticeable for this inconsistent offense.
When these team’s last played at the “Snap” there were plenty of America fans that generated an exciting atmosphere. This game is set to be a very hard-fought and intense clash at the Mission Valley Fortress, and hopefully the atmosphere can live up to that.
