Anibal Godoy and Jeppe Tverskov both scored their first goals for San Diego FC in the 3-0 win against Seattle Sounders.

Attacking play is not what these two players excel in or their primary function within this team, so it was nice to see the pair score last Saturday night.

Both scored similar goals, in which a winger provided an assist in the penalty area, and the respective midfielder finished the opportunity. Hirving Lozano provided the assist on Tverskov’s goal, while Anders Dreyer racked up his second assist of the season on Godoy’s goal.

“I’m not usually one of the guys getting up in the box from my position, so it’s kind of nice that the one time I’ve been there the whole season, I score a goal”, said Tverskov on his goal.

Anibal Godoy also commented on his goal after scoring on Saturday night: “I think it was an important goal for me. First goal with this team in this stadium, I think personally it is important. However, the most important thing is what we did as a group. It’s not easy to score three goals in the first half. In two games, we have six goals in the first half.”

Both players have been among SDFC’s most important players, as clearly seen when Godoy was unavailable in the match against Austin FC. The midfield and just the team in general lost a lost of stability and defensive order without the Panama captain in the squad.

Godoy and Tverskov both provide similar characteristics as they both have defensive capabilities, but also help a great deal in the offensive transitional play from the backline to the attack. Godoy specifically can be seen running up and down the pitch for the entire 90 minutes, seemingly without losing a single breath.

Godoy was asked about this work rate by TJ Sports reporter Alejandro Guzman in the post-game press conference. Godoy said, “The motivation comes from knowing that I’m 35 years old and that I don’t have a lot of time left in my career. I have to enjoy each game and try to play each game at 100 percent. I don’t give anything away and try to be very professional.”

Tverskov is the team captain and has the ability to provide long-range passes from anywhere on the pitch. Tverskov did say, “Being captain is amazing,” in the post-game press conference on Saturday night.

The Danish midfielder is the player in Major League Soccer with the most interceptions (19) this season. Tverskov really plays the role of the leader and defensive midfielder to perfection in Mikey Varas’s team and has been one the key components to San Diego’s early success.

The chemistry within the midfield is very apparent, along with the entire team. Anibal Godoy was asked about this by EVT. Godoy said, “I think the connection on the pitch has been important, but more than that, I think this group is special off the pitch. This is a very good, healthy group, a family.”

“We always remind ourselves that we have to be united as a family and take that union to the field. If you see when a player makes a bad pass, doesn’t make a run, we try and motivate them. I think those details are what makes a team great.”

Godoy has captained his nation of Panama for some time, and his leadership is also clearly seen in this team. Both Godoy and Tverskov have proven to be absolutely vital at this stage for San Diego FC, and it will be exciting to see them continue to work together this season.
