Quantrill battered again in Padres 10-2 loss

The San Diego Padres suffered a loss on Monday to the Chicago Cubs in the first game of a four-game series.
Writing that it was a loss is a nice way to put it, as the Padres were pounded by Chicago.
At one point during this 2019 season, Cal Quantrill looked as though he established himself as a major league pitcher. The Canadian right-hander was hitting his spots and showing a great ability to adjust on the mound. Reality set in for the rookie, as he has now allowed eight earned runs in three games straight for San Diego. Quantrill has allowed 24 earned runs in his last 13 2/3 innings.
The rookie’s final line was not stellar as he went 4 1/3 innings allowing eight runs on ten hits. He struck out five in the game and allowed two walks. Quantrill threw 84 pitches in the game and now has an ERA at 5.12 on the season. He will need to adjust and show a lot more in his last few starts of the season. “The wheels came off in the fifth inning for him,” Andy Green said after the game. He also indicated that Quantrill is working on getting left-handers out more efficiently.
In relief of Quantrill, Eric Yardley and Javy Guerra pitched scoreless ball, while Robbie Erlin allowed two earned runs in an inning of relief. Erlin has an ERA of 5.51 now on the season. Guerra hit 100 on the night with a fastball and looks promising.
The Padres did not manage much offensively, as they only scattered nine hits in the game.
Nick Martini continues to hot as he went 3-for-5 in the loss and is 13-for-35 (.371) since being claimed off waivers from the A’s. “He gives you really professional at-bats,” Green said about the left-handed-hitting outfielder.
Manny Machado went 2-for-3 before being removed for Ty France in the blowout loss. The infielder is showing signs of swinging a better bat. Luis Urias went 2-for-4 out of the eight-hole in the lineup and now has a .191 average on the season.
The Padres will look to rookie right-handed pitcher Ronald Bolanos to get a win in the series. Cubs’ left-handed pitcher Jose Quintana will oppose him.
