Pirela DFA & Trade is Another Example of Padres 40-Man Shuffle
With 40-man roster issues, expect the San Diego Padres to make more moves as they did in DFA’ing and trading Jose Pirela.
The San Diego Padres DFA’d veteran Jose Pirela last week as the team needed room on their 40-man roster.
On Saturday, the Padres agreed to a deal with the Philadelphia Phillies where they sent the versatile Pirela east to the Phillies for future cash considerations. Jose Pirela will get a chance to compete for a roster spot on a team that has playoff aspirations.
More talent is on the way to Petco Park, and there is sure to be more moves in the coming days, weeks, and months for the team. A.J. Preller and his staff will need to be creative as several prospects will need room on the 40-man roster eventually.
As the Padres get better, there will be more decisions like the DFA of Jose Pirela. Alex Dickerson, Phil Maton, and Matt Wisler were all released and traded in the past month or so to create space. Their roster spots were just too valuable, and the Padres had to give them their walking papers.
More players are arguably being evaluated for a potential similar move.
On the bubble currently are players like Brad Wieck, Ian Kinsler, and Robbie Erlin.
Several players could make a debut very soon in the majors for the Padres. Players like Esteban Quiroz, Evan Miller, Steven Wilson, Travis Radke, Ivan Castillo, Michael Gettys, to name a few. Prospects like this are close, and they will all require 40-man spots. More moves will need to happen.
Then there is the fact that some players are currently on the 60-day IL and will eventually need to be added to the roster. Jose Castillo, Miguel Diaz, Jacob Nix, Garrett Richards, and Franchy Cordero are listed in this group. Each will require a transaction.
A.J. Preller and his staff have their work cut out for them in this recent roster shuffle. You will see some creative stuff in the next few months as this team attempts to get ample playing time for their young players while evaluating all the young prospects who currently call Petco Park home.

Sadly, Alex Dickerson has a 1.5 WAR in only 87 AB’s for the Padres dreaded enemy, the Giants.
One and a half WAR, while Hosmer has 0.2, and falling. But, don’t worry, there is only 6 and half years left on Hosmer’s contract and his bottom-of-the-rung first base play. Myers, with all his warts, would be a breath of fresh air (that is how bad this is).
Cutting players is not that simple, and I have no faith in AJ. I wince every time I see a Padres trade rumor. Now he has added players to the 40 man roster than did not need to be there, and are not helping the team make the play offs, and so now there are extra players that need to be cut.
An end to the Pirela era!
Next is to trade one of the corner OFs. And maybe Kinsler
James,
Surprised you have Quiroz on this list.He has not hit, at least for average as good as his middle infield counterparts Mejia Breen or Batten at AAA.What do the Padres like about him?
The Pads need to send Kinsler and Myers packing. I’ve in fact always thought Myers was overrated and Kinsler, besides being a jerk, is way passed his prime. The team needs to do something and quick. As a life-long fan, I was so exited for this season, but I am rather disappointed (to put it lightly)….this season was supposed to be different, I’m still waiting! We may have the best farm system in the MLB, but if that doesn’t equal wins, who gives a damn….
