Peoria Javelinas Padres AFL Report: October 25-27 (German, Morgan lights out)
The Peoria Javelinas’ Arizona Fall League season continued over the weekend of October 25, with the Javelinas playing in three games.
Across those three games, seven Padres minor leaguers saw action in at least one game. Here is a recap of their performances.
Ethan Salas – Three Walks (Two Games)
Leodalis De Vries – 0-for-3, Walk, Run Scored
Romeo Sanabria – 1-for-8, Run Scored (Two Games)
Ryan Bergert – 3.1 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 4 BB, 4 K (71 pitches – 42 strikes)
Harry Gustin – 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K (14 pitches – 8 strikes)
David Morgan – 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 K (24 pitches – 14 strikes)
Luis German – 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K (10 pitches – 5 strikes)
Padres batters on the Javelinas were mostly limited in their production over the weekend, but as a tandem, the trio of Leodalis De Vries, Ethan Salas, and Romeo Sanabria reached base five times and scored two runs.
Ethan Salas walked a combined three times in his two games played, again showing the plate discipline that has scouts and the Padres organization buzzing with excitement. Salas’ approach at the plate has continued to progress in the AFL, and he’s no slouch defensively, as he threw out the lone attempted base stealer against him (A’s No. 10 Prospect Denzel Clarke). Leodalis De Vries reached base once in his one game played, but scored a run after reaching via the walk. Romeo Sanabria scored a run as well across two games played.
Padre pitchers enjoyed the more eventful weekends over the three-game stretch. Four pitchers saw action over the weekend, with all three Padre relievers tossing scoreless outings.
Luis German made a scoreless appearance on the mound, retiring three batters on just ten pitches, with a 50% strike rate. German struggled with his command early on in his career, but if the 23-year-old flamethrower could keep his strike rates above 50%, the velocity and spin of his fastball and secondary offerings would give opposing batters fits.
Both Harry Gustin and David Morgan made appearances on October 26, with Gustin tossing one inning of scoreless baseball. The former 18th-round pick allowed a two-out base hit to score an inherited runner but held the damage to the lone hit, retiring three of four batters faced in relief of Braves prospect Adam Maier. David Morgan was called upon in the seventh inning with two runners on and one out. Despite allowing an inherited runner to score, Morgan wound up returning to the mound after the Javelinas tied the game at seven, and in the top of the eighth inning, he faced runners on first and second with one out. Facing former Padres prospect Robert Hassell III, Morgan induced a first-pitch grounder to Leodalis De Vries, who threw to former Padre prospect Jay Beshears at second to start an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play. Morgan was credited with the victory after the Javelinas secured a walk-off victory in the bottom of the frame as well.
Ryan Bergert started for the Javelinas on October 25 and struck out four batters in 3.1 innings of work. Bergert showed his ability to battle as well, as he limited damage against him despite four walks and six hits allowed. However, his command failed him in this outing, as he allowed three home runs on pitches in the middle of the zone. All three home runs came when facing left-handed batters, which could be a troubling pattern or simply an aberration. Bergert will look to work on neutralizing left-handed batters in his next outing, and a return to form would be a significant boost for the right-hander going into November.
The Javelinas play their next games Tuesday, October 29 through Thursday, October 31, to close out October, looking to gain some momentum as the autumn goes on.
