The Peoria Javelinas’ season continued in the Arizona Fall League over the weekend, and several members of the Padres’ organization saw game action.

Here is a recap of their performances between the October 11 & October 12 games.
Ethan Salas – 2-for-4, Two-Run Double (10/11)
Leodalis De Vries – 1-for-4, Double (10/12)
Luis German – 0.2 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 0 K (28 pitches – 13 strikes)

While Padres farmhands didn’t see too much game action in the Javelinas’ past two games, they showed why they are so highly touted in the eyes of evaluators. Ethan Salas certainly highlighted the Padres prospects’ performances. The Padres’ No. 1 prospect (and MLB Pipeline’s No. 19 overall prospect) slugged a two-run double against former SDSU Aztec T.J. Fondtain to extend the Javelinas’ lead to 3-0. While no Statcast data was available from this game, it marked Salas’ second extra-base hit of the AFL season. The 18-year old would only add to it, lacing another double in the game, this time against Derrick Edington of the Rays’ system. Even with an 0-fer in the Javelinas’ October 12 game, Salas has registered an .807 OPS in the AFL thus far, showing his gap-to-gap hitting abilities with slugging to boot. Salas’ power will continue to develop as he grows older, and his performances in Arizona have provided more signs into the player he could become.

Salas wasn’t the only Padres prospect to deliver with the bat, as Leodalis De Vries saw action on October 12. Again hitting out of the DH spot in the lineup, De Vries posted a 1-for-4 performance with a double, his first hit of the AFL season.

The Padres have been cautious in how De Vries has seen game action since he incurred a shoulder injury on August 17, but De Vries himself said (through translator Juan Pena) “I feel like I’m getting the hang of things. I’m feeling better at the plate, and my shoulder is feeling good.” It is not yet known when De Vries will once again see action at shortstop, but seeing “El Mutante” back in action is a sight to behold for Padres fans.

Lastly, only one of four Padres pitchers assigned to the AFL saw action this weekend, as Luis German pitched on October 11. The right-hander has shown the ceiling that he can be an elite set-up reliever, but the biggest detriment to his game has been his command. While German’s fastball sits in the high 90s with above-average breaking pitches for his age, his inability to command the baseball at times has led to suboptimal results. This was the case in his relief appearance against the Mesa Solar Sox, as the right-hander recorded two outs but walked two and allowed four runs to score on a pair of two-RBI base hits, with a wild pitch sprinkled in. Clearly, it wasn’t the right-hander’s best work, but he and the team look to improve going forward in the AFL season.

The Javelinas return to action on Monday, October 14, vs the Glendale Desert Dogs. As is the case with most AFL games, the game can be viewed via MLB.com.
