Peoria Javelinas Lose 10-9 in 10 Innings to Solar Sox
Sloan Park, Mesa Arizona
The first three games of the 2018 Arizona Fall League are in the books for the Peoria Javelinas.
Unfortunately, the team lost its first game of the year by the score of 10-9 on a walk-off, sacrifice fly by the Mesa Solar Sox in the bottom of the 10th.
The defense was key in the team’s first loss of the year, as Peoria made four errors on the day. Lucius Fox and Mario Feliciano made an error each and third baseman Weston Wilson made two himself. That is now four errors in three games from the Javelinas at third base. Hudson Potts started the first two games and made errors in both contests. He had the day off on Thursday.
Peoria managed nine runs on 10 hits in the game, so the offense was not an issue. Every starter except for second baseman Izzy Wilson recorded a hit in the game. The team also recorded six walks in the game against the Solar Sox’ pitching staff.
The Javelinas’ staff were the victims of bad defense all day, as Mesa scored four unearned runs in the game. Phoenix Sanders blew the save midway through the game, with a rough sixth and seventh inning where he allowed four earned runs for Peoria. Mesa battled all day and walked off in the 10th on a sac-fly off the bat of Daniel Woodrow.
In the game, Buddy Reed played left field and went 1-for-5 with a run and a strikeout on the day. The swing and miss was big as it came in the top of the 10th with a runner on second and nobody out. He continues to grow as a baseball player. This is the second year that Reed has played winter league baseball, as he played in Australia last year with the Canberra Cavalry.
Travis Radke pitched for Peoria and went 2.2 innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits and three walks. He struck out three in his 56-pitch effort in the desert. The defense for the Javelinas continues to be an issue as an error in the ninth prevented the Javelinas win and the Radke save. The left-handed pitcher continues to show a lot of moxie on the mound attacking hitters with multiple pitches.
