Padres Winter League Report: October 18 (Avila’s First Start, Olivares Homers)
Plenty of San Diego Padres minor leaguers were in action on Thursday.
Here is a recap of the day’s action:
Arizona Fall League
Austin Allen– (1-4) RBI, BB, K
The Javelinas won on a walk-off in the ninth, as Austin Allen went 1-for-4 in the game. The backstop batted in the cleanup position and has looked solid this fall in Arizona. He is hitting .250 on the year in just a handful of at-bats.
Hudson Potts– (1-4) Run, RBI, BB, Error
Potts is off to a .250 start as well and hit his first homer of the year on Wednesday. He recorded his third error of the spring in this game, which is a bit troubling. He hasn’t shown defensive issues in the past, so this could just be a simple fix for the infielder.
Mexican Winter League
Gerardo Reyes– 1 IP, BB, 2 K
Reyes is pitching for the Yaquis de Obregon and has yet to give up a run this season. He is Rule 5 eligible and could be someone worthy of a roster spot. We will have to wait and see what the Padres do with this right-handed reliever.
Dominican Winter League
Eric Yardley– 1 IP
The sidearmed pitcher threw for the Gigantes del Cibao on Thursday and pitched a clean inning. He still has yet to allow a run this winter in the D.R.
Diego Goris– (0-3) K
The infielder is playing for the Aguilas Cibaenas and went 0-for-3 on Thursday He is off to a .375 start this year.
Jeisson Rosario– Pinch runner
The speedy outfielder was used as a pinch-runner for the Tigres del Licey. He has only made one start and is still looking for his first hit of the season.
Venezuelan Winter League
Gabriel Arias– (1-3)
The defensive specialist played for the Tiburones de La Guaira on Thursday and went 1-for-3. He is off to a .250 start in Venezuela.
Pedro Avila– 4 IP, 2 H, BB, 5 K (62 pitches/40 strikes)
Avila made his first start of the winter for the Bravos de Margarita and was nearly perfect. He only allowed three baserunners in four scoreless innings. Avila is in need of protection in the upcoming Rule 5 draft for the Padres.
Edward Olivares– (1-5) HR, 2 RBI, Run, K
Another guy who needs to be protected in the December Rule 5 draft is Olivares. He is off to a .333 start for the Tigres de Aragua in Venezuela. He has put on weight and looks to turn the corner with his offensive ability in 2019.
Reinaldo Ilarraza– (0-3) BB, 3 K, SB, 3 Errors
Despite hitting .444 on the year and leading the league in hitting, Ilarraza has played sporadically. He started at shortstop on Thursday and made three errors fielding grounders. He can play short, but is probably more of a second baseman or third baseman moving forward.
