Padres Winter League Report: November 6 (Diaz Roughed Up in Peoria)
The Peoria Javelinas have lost two in a row as they were beaten by the Mesa Solar Sox by the score of 7-5. Miguel Diaz was charged with the loss as he was roughed up early and often. Peoria is now 15-8 on the year.
There were a few other players in action.
Here is a recap of the day’s action:
Arizona Fall League
Austin Allen– (1-4) BB, K
The backstop is hitting .267 on the year and should be added to the 40-man roster soon. The Padres have to know that he would be selected in the Rule 5 draft if the team left him unprotected. Allen could be a trade chip or factor in the Padres’ catching depth at some point in 2019.
Buddy Reed– (1-4) BB
The outfielder is now hitting .365 on the year after a 1-for-4 game on Tuesday. He has shown a better approach at the plate in the desert and looks to be really advancing with the bat. His two-strike approach is impressive as Reed understands he needs to make more contact to utilize his speed.
Miguel Diaz– 3.1 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 5 K (67 pitches/41 strikes)
The right-hander is 2-1 now with a 5.71 ERA after being knocked around on Tuesday. Diaz has thrown a lot and could be in need of a rest period. The Padres surely have plans for Diaz as he has tremendous stuff.
Travis Radke– 1 IP, 1 K
Scrappy left-hander Travis Radke keeps on rolling along. He is sporting a 2.08 ERA so far for the Javelinas. He is not a hard thrower, but is very aggressive with his approach as he attacks hitters with multiple pitches on both sides of the plate.
Mexican winter league
Gerardo Reyes– 1 IP, 1 H, 1 K
He has yet to allow a run in Mexico and is really showing something with his 0.00 ERA. The hard thrower is pitching for the Yaquis de Obregon and throwing in middle relief for the team.
Venezuelan winter league
Edward Olivares– (1-4) 2 K
Olivares continues to play well. He is hitting .344 on the year and is really impressing a ton of people. He is due for protection in the Rule 5 draft, but hasn’t played higher than High Single-A. The Padres will likely risk him in next month’s event.
Dominican winter league
No Padres’ minor leaguers in action
