Padres Winter League Report: November 13 (Luis Torrens Debuts in Venezuela/Franchy Debuts in D.R.)
The Peoria Javelinas won 14-3 over Mesa in the desert. Peoria has already clinched first place and they will play for the AFL championship on Saturday.
Luis Torrens debuted in Venezuela and Franchy Cordero debuted in the Dominican Republic on Tuesday. Both men will be key members of their squad for the rest of the season. Expect to see more players debut in the next week or so. Fernando Tatis Jr. and Francisco Mejia are both teammates in the D.R. on the Estrellas and could be in action very soon.
Here is a look at the day’s action around the globe:
Arizona Fall League
Blake Rogers– 1.1 IP, 2 K
Getting a late start on the season in the AFL didn’t bother Rogers, who is rocking a 1.23 ERA for the Javelinas. He should be a viable option next year for the Sod Poodles and could work his way to major league service time soon. He is progressing the right way to be a decent middle relief option.
Dauris Valdez– 1 IP, 1 K
A young option eventually in the bullpen is this hard-throwing Dominican. He has a 4.50 ERA in the desert and has struck out 15 batters in 10 innings pitched. If he can refine his command and get more consistent with his breaking pitches, he could be a decent option for the team eventually.
Venezuelan winter league
Luis Torrens– (0-1)
The catcher made his debut on Tuesday and went 0-for-1 after entering late in the game. He is playing for the Navegantes del Magallanes and should get a decent amount of at-bats in Venezuela.
Gabriel Arias– (0-0)
Arias entered the game late as a defensive replacement. He is hitting .250 on the season in Venezuela.
Mexican winter league
Christian Villanueva– (0-4)
The Padres’ third baseman is off to a slow start in Mexico as he is hitting .118 so far with only one home run. He was serving as the team’s DH on Tuesday when he went 0-for-4.
Gerardo Reyes– 1 IP, BB, K
This Mexican right-handed pitcher continues to be impressive with a 0.00 ERA in 13 games. He needs to be added to the 40-man roster in the coming weeks, but the Padres have other young players who need protection. It will be interesting to see what the team does.
Chris Huffman– 5.1 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 2 K
The right-hander gave up five runs, but only one was earned on Tuesday. He is maintaining a 4.03 ERA for the Caneros de los Mochis in six starts and 29 innings pitched. Huffman has walked 14 and struck out 16 batters in that time. He will probably start the season in El Paso as a member of the rotation.
Dominican winter league
Franmil Reyes– (2-4) K
La Mole continues to hit as he went 2-for-4 on Tuesday. He is up to .389 on the year in the D.R.
Franchy Cordero– (2-4) Run, K
Franmil’s teammate in the Dominican will be Franchy Cordero, who made his debut on Tuesday for the Leones del Escogido.
Jonathan Aro– 1 IP, 2 K
Right-handed reliever Jonathan Aro threw a scoreless inning on Tuesday and his ERA is down to 4.91 on the year.
