Padres Winter League Report: November 10 (Villanueva & Ornelas Debut in Mexico)
Only Austin Allen was in action in Peoria, but there were others who played around the globe on Saturday.
Both Christian Villanueva and Tirso Ornelas made their debuts for the Yaquis de Obregon.
Here is a recap of the day’s events:
Arizona Fall League
Austin Allen– (1-3) Run, 2 RBI, 2 BB, K
The left-handed-hitting catcher went 1-for-3 with two RBI and two walks on Saturday. He is now hitting .245 on the year in Arizona.
Mexican winter league
Christian Villanueva– (0-3) BB
The third baseman made his debut on Saturday for the Yaquis de Obregon and went 0-for-3 with a walk. The Mexican-born infielder will look to build on his strong rookie campaign in which he powered 20 home runs for the Padres.
Tirso Ornelas– (0-1)
The young, left-handed-hitting outfielder made his debut on Saturday. He was used as a pinch hitter in his only at-bat. The teenage talent will likely get more playing time as the season progresses.
Dominican winter league
Diego Goris– (1-4) 2B, RBI, Run
The veteran minor leaguer is hitting .267 on the year after a 1-for-4 game on Saturday. He should start the year in El Paso and provide depth for the upper minor leagues.
Venezuelan winter league
Gabriel Arias– (0-3) K
Shortstop Gabriel Arias is hitting .267 on the year after going hitless on Saturday. He hasn’t seen much playing time in the last week or so but has now played in back-to-back games.
