Padres Winter League Report: January 4 (Torrens Homers in Venezuela)
There were a total of eight men in action on Friday around the globe.
Here is a recap of the day’s events:
Australian Baseball League
Michael Gettys– (2-4) 2B, 2 RBI, BB
The outfielder continues to swing a hot bat in Australia as he went 2-for-4 with a double on Friday morning. He owns a .318 average so far this season in the ABL.
Todd Van Steensel– 1.1 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 K
The recently inked Australian native blew a save on Friday, allowing two earned runs in a little over an inning pitched. His ERA is at 2.35 ERA now.
Jarryd Dale– (0-3) BB, Run, SB, K
Dale continues to struggle with the bat, going 0-for-3 on Friday. He is hitting .175 on the year for Melbourne.
Mexican winter league
Esteban Quiroz– (0-4) K
Scrappy second baseman Esteban Quiroz went 0-for-4 on Friday in Mexico. He has a decent chance to make a splash at some point in 2019 for the Padres.
Dominican winter league
Fernando Tatis Jr.– (1-4) Run, BB, K
Tatis was batting third and playing shortstop for the Estrellas on Friday. He went 1-for-4 in the game and committed his fifth error in 10 playoff games. That is a bit of a concern.
Franchy Cordero– (0-3) 2 BB, 2 K
Franchy was playing left field and batting third for the Leones. The left-handed hitter went 0-for-3 with two walks in the game. He also struck out twice as he continues to have issues making consistent contact.
Puerto Rican winter league
Aldemar Burgos– (0-3) BB, 2K
Outfielder Aldemar Burgos went 0-for-3 on Friday in the island of Puerto Rico. He has had a decent year this winter and could be in store for a productive 2019 season.
Venezuelan winter league
Luis Torrens– (1-3) HR, RBI, Run, BB
Torrens was at first base on Friday and produced a home run for his Venezuelan team. He has hit well this winter and has played some behind the plate. Torrens has major league experience and could be a decent option for the Padres down the road.
