Padres Winter League Report: December 6 (Reyes 6th save in Mexico/Franchy & Castillo two hits each in D.R.)
The San Diego Padres winter league report for December 6th.
There were several men in action throughout the globe for the San Diego Padres on Friday.
Here is a recap of the day’s events.
Dominican Winter League
Webster Rivas– (2-4) Run
The right-handed catcher is hitting .189 on the season after a 2-for-4 game at the plate on Friday. He started the season slow for the Gigantes, but as his playing time has increased, so has his production with the bat.
Ivan Castillo– (2-4) 2B, Run, RBI
The versatile infielder is hitting 267 (44-for-165) so far for the Leones. He has recorded a .631 OPS, which his a bit disappointing. Castillo has played all over the infield and has a great chance to be a utility player in the Major Leagues. He will likely start the 2020 season in El Paso.
Franchy Cordero– (2-5) 2 RBI, 3 K
Cordero just started playing this week in the Dominican after being slowed with another injury. He is hitting .429 on the year and has played all over the outfield for the Leones de Escogido. Cordero drove in two runs on Friday, but also struck out three times.
Manuel Margot– (1-4)
The Padres centerfielder is hitting .167 in his first handful of games for the Toros de Este. The right-handed hitter is playing centerfield and batting in the leadoff spot for his team in the D.R,
Mexican Winter League
Esteban Quiroz– (0-4)
Scrappy Esteban Quiroz is hitting .250 for Los Mochis in just a few at-bats. Quiroz has shown decent power and quite a bit of energy in his limited time in the Padres’ system. He will likely get a long look in the spring. Expect him to be invited to Major League camp.
Gerardo Reyes– 1 IP, 2H, BB
The hard-throwing right-hander recorded his 6th save of the year on Friday. He has a 1.00 ERA so far in the Mexican season. Reyes has thrown a total of 9 innings pitched and has struck out 11 batters. He has a great shot at making the Padres in 2020 and be a useful member of the bullpen.
Puerto Rican Winter League
Michael Gettys– (0-1) K
Gettys did not start the game on Friday, but came on as a pinch hitter and struck out. He is hitting .163 on the year for the Indio de Mayaguez.
Australian Baseball League
Jordy Barley– (0-2)
Barley played second base and batted last for the Canberra Cavalry on Friday night/Saturday morning. He is hitting .238 on the season in the ABL.
Taylor Kohlwey– (0-1) 2 BB, Run
Kohlwey walked twice in the game and scored a run for Canberra. The left-handed hitter is off to a .242 start in Australia.
Jonny Homza– (0-1)
Homza is playing catcher and third base for the Tuatara. He went 0-for-1 on Friday night/Saturday morning and is hitting .194 on the year for Auckland. The right-handed hitter has a decent stroke but is trying to learn how to catch which can be a slow process.
Jarryd Dale– (0-2) K
The right-handed hitter is batting .115 on the season for the Melbourne Aces.
