Padres Winter League Report: December 14 (Scholtens pitches in D.R./Kohlwey homers in Australia)
There were a few San Diego Padres’ players in action throughout the globe on Saturday.
Here is a recap of the day’s events.
Dominican Winter League
Franchy Cordero– (1-4) 2 Ks
The outfielder is hitting .360 on the year after a 1-for-4 game at the plate for the Leones de Escogido. Cordero hurt a hamstring early in the week, but he played in consecutive games and does not look to be injured in any way.
Webster Rivas– (1-4) Run, K
The right-handed pitcher is hitting .182 on the season. The defensive specialist has been getting consistent playing time in the D.R. this winter. Rivas is highly-regarded by the baseball staff of the Padres for his ability to work with young pitchers.
Jesse Scholtens– 2 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, BB, 2 K
The right-handed pitcher now has a 4.26 ERA for the Aguilas in the Dominican Republic. Scholtens is getting in some work in as he attempts to be a factor for the Major League organization in 2020.
Mexican Winter League
Esteban Quiroz– (0-4) 3 K
The Mexican infielder is off to a .209 start to his winter season in Mexico. He is playing for Los Mochis and batting in the middle of the lineup. Quiroz is an older prospect but could be given a shot with the Padres at some point in 2020.
Gerardo Reyes– (Win)Â 0.2 IP, H, BB, K
Pitching in relief, Reyes earned a win for the Yaquis de Obregon. He is now 1-0 on the season with a 1.54 ERA. The hard-throwing right-hander will surely be a factor for the Padres in 2020 as their bullpen takes shape.
Puerto Rican Winter League
No players in action
Australian Baseball League
Jarryd Dale– (0-4) K
The Australian native is hitting .103 in the ABL. The right-handed hitter has continued to have issues with the bat, and that is a concern for the Padres moving forward. He played shortstop in the game for the Melbourne Aces.
Taylor Kohlwey– (3-4) HR, 2B, 2 Runs, RBI, BB
The left-hander is hitting .292 for the Canberra Cavalry currently after a 3-for-4 game at the plate. He has played all three outfield spots in the ABL and is a sleeper candidate to get some playing time with the Padres this coming season. Most likely, it will be 2021 before he shows his face at Petco Park.
Jordy Barley– (1-4) Run, K
The Padres’ infield prospect is hitting .245 on the season in the ABL. He batted last on Saturday night/Sunday morning and played second base for the Cavalry. He is showing some progress with the bat and could factor in Fort Wayne this coming season.
