Padres victimized by Coors Field again, lose 10-7 to Rockies
Denver, Colorado
The Colorado Rockies (19-21) beat the San Diego Padres (22-19) 10-7 Sunday afternoon in Denver. The Padres had ten hits, but only three for extra bases, while the Rockies hit six of their thirteen for extra bases, including three home runs. Colorado outscored San Diego 25-13 in the three-game series.
San Diego came into their third game in Colorado having scored only six runs against the Rockies’ 15 runs in the weekend series. It appeared that they would get their offense going against Antonia Senzatela, who had lost both his starts at home this year with a 9.28 ERA. Instead, Senzatela shut down the Padres, including 14 in a row. He gave up only four hits and one run, walking two and striking out seven, exiting after giving up singles to Wil Myers and Austin Allen with two out in the seventh. He was charged with two more runs when Myers and Allen came around to score.
Nick Margevicius took the mound for the Padres. He entered the game with a 2-3 record, 3.47 ERA, and 4.78 FIP. He had struck out 6.44 per nine innings through his first 36.1 innings but was able to fool a few of the Rockies, striking out five in five innings and only walking one. Unfortunately, he gave up eight hits in spacious Coors Field, including five for extra bases. The loss dropped his record to 2-4, and his ERA jumped to 4.14.
The Rockies got to Margevicius in the second inning. Ramiel Tapia and Ryan McMahon led off the inning with doubles, putting the Rockies up 1-0. Tony Wolters singled to score McMahon and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Senzatela. Charlie Blackmon sent a 1-0 slider deep to right to make the score 4-0.
Margevicius singled leading off the third inning, and Greg Garcia walked. Franmil Reyes grounded into a fielder’s choice to second, forcing Garcia and advancing Margevicius to third. Margevicius came home on Manny Machado’s sacrifice fly to deep right field to make the score 1-0.
Blackmon hit his second home run of the day, his third in the series in the fourth inning on an 88 MPH fastball down the middle.
Padres’ defense shined in the fifth inning. Reyes threw out David Dahl at second trying to stretch a single for the first out. Ty France made a diving catch on a bullet off the bat of Nolan Arenado to save extra bases.
The Padres made it close in the seventh. Singles by Myers and Allen chased Senzatela. Pinch hitter Alex Dickerson, just 1-10 since getting called up from El Paso, singled up the middle to bring in Myers from third. Garcia doubled home Allen to make the score 5-3 with Dickerson taking third. Reyes grounded to second to end the threat.
The Rockies put up five runs in the bottom of the seventh when they loaded the bases against Geraldo Reyes on a single, hit by pitch, and an intentional walk. Brad Wieck’s first pitch in relief was hammered down the first base line by Daniel Murphy for a 3-run double. Two pitches later Tapia homered to straight-away centerfield, his fifth of the year, making the score 10-3 Rockies.
The Padres added a run in the ninth inning on a single by Myers, and two-out singles by pinch-hitter Margot, and Garcia. Franmil Reyes then knocked a three-run home run to left field, his 11th of the season. Scott Oberg replaced Seunghwan Oh and walked Manny Machado. Machado advanced to second on defensive indifference, but Eric Hosmer lined out to centerfield to end the game.
Austin Allen got his first start behind the plate for the Padres. His seventh-inning single was the first of his major league career. He walked in one plate appearance last night.
The Padres have a day off Monday before continuing the road trip against the National League West-leading Dodgers in Los Angeles. The Rockies head east for an interleague matchup in Boston.
