Padres Special: 5 Reasons to be Thankful For the San Diego Padres
It is surely a lot easier being thankful for the Padres right now than in seasons past. The team has taken the correct strides to grow the franchise and finally come out of obscurity. For much of the teams history they have strived to be average. That is a sure way to die a slow death in Major League Baseball.
A team either has to be all-in with its attempt to win, or be in a rebuilding mode for the future. For the past 10-15 years the team has been stuck in the middle, occasionally having success, but for the most part just being average. That has produced mid level draft picks and a stale talent on the playing field. The fans were not happy.
With the addition of A.J. Preller came an ambitious goal to resurrect this franchise and help it grow. The additions of James Shields, Matt Kemp, Justin Upton, Wil Myers, Craig Kimbrel and Derek Norris energized the fan base and got the mainstream media to talk about the Padres once again. The experiment was a failure as far as wins in the standings, but the fan base is still excited for the future of this team.
In reality it will take time to change the winning culture for the Padres. There is no easy quick fix. If you think there is, then you obviously do not know the game of baseball. The team has taken some recent criticism from the fans regarding dealing Joaquin Benoit and Craig Kimbrel. However, the farm system received a boost in the trade and the team cannot sustain a successful franchise unless the future is solidified. There are many things to be thankful for if you are a Padres fan. Matt Kemp finally got the long-awaited first cycle in franchise history. That was a great moment in Padres history. The following moments and people are definitely reasons to give thanks.
