Padres sign 16-year-old LHP Luis Gutierrez from Venezuela

The San Diego Padres have signed Luis Gutierrez, a 16-year-old pitcher out of Venezuela.

The San Diego Padres made a few trades this week.

Losing Franmil Reyes was tough, but the Padres gained a really talented player to add to their incredible group. Taylor Trammell could be a star in this league.

At the deadline, Brad Wieck was traded to the Cubs for Carl Edwards Jr. in a deal that brought the Padres some international money from Chicago. That could be very useful for A.J. Preller as he loves his young prospects.

The Padres have already spent this international period since the market opened on July 2. Ismael Mena and Reginald Preciado were both signed by the Padres. The team spent $3.5 million on the duo. There will likely be more signing in the coming months as the team gathers more spending money.

On Wednesday, the team signed 16-year-old Luis Gutierrez on his birthday. He signs with the team on the first day he is eligible. The left-handed pitcher is listed as the 29th overall international prospect by MLB Pipeline. He is young, but there is a lot to like about him.

Gutierrez has a plus fastball for his age where he is clocked between 87-90 mph. He is showing two plus offspeed pitches already. A true 12-to-6 curveball and a decent change give him the ability to pitch as a starter. He has a very clean motion and could develop in time. He also shows plus command for his age.

Gutierrez is likely a few years before he starts playing in the States. He just turned 16, and the team will likely wait till next year before he pitches on the DSL team.
