The draft pick is finally in, as the San Diego Padres roll with Ryan Weathers as their 2018 first round selection. The left-handed prep pitcher out of Tennessee was highly regarded as one of the best high school arms in the whole draft.

The young man has a world of talent and should add nicely to a farm system that was already ranked #1 in all of baseball. He has a fastball that sits comfortably in the 90-93 mph range, but has the ability to hit 94-95 when needed. His secondary arsenal also consists of plus pitches, as his curve and change are both serviceable. He is young, and there is room to grow with both pitches.

Max Fried was selected by the team in 2012, the only other time the Padres have ever picked seventh overall. Fried was the first of four first round selections that year. The left-handed pitcher was dealt to the Atlanta Braves in the Justin Upton deal and is nearly major league ready.

San Diego Padres’ scouts chose Weathers, as he brings certain intangibles to his game. Sure, his athletic ability is off the charts, but it is the little things that truly matter on game day and beyond the box score. The Padres did well with this selection, as he should progress fairly quickly through the system. His father, David Weathers pitcher 19 years in MLB and you have to figure he has a high baseball IQ.

Weathers adds to an organization that already has high several upside players. If you are not excited about the future of this team, then you just aren’t paying attention. The drafting of Weathers seems to insinuate that the team has something up their sleeve with their future picks. With extra cash to spend, the team could persuade some talented players away from school. We will see.

Here is a video of Weathers in action, as you get a sense of his abilities on a baseball diamond.

In this next video clip you witness his ability to repeat his mechanics.

This was a wonderful selection for the Padres and a perfect way to open up the 2018 draft. The Padres now have a selection with the #38 pick (Competitive Balance Round A). The team could pull a rabbit out of their hat with this pick. We will bring you that pick as it comes in. This is a busy day for the San Diego Padres and we will do our best to keep you covered.

For now, enjoy Weathers and the possibilities that he brings to the franchise.

  1. I don’t care for the pick as much as everyone else. This was a pick to try and get two good players but not the best available player. Tough sell for me when you have the 7th pick.

  2. Weathers put up ridiculous numbers this past season, somewhat comparable to what Gore put up a year ago. I don’t hate the pick, but I hope the Padres weren’t expecting Murray to fall to them at 38, which was mentioned a couple of laces. James, where do you think Weathers will slot in on the Padres top prospects list?

PS I cannot believe Liberatore and Singer are still available.

  3. I was surprised. I think most people were. We kept hearing Liberatore. AJ loves 2nd generation pros. We will find out if Weathers agreed to underslot money. Overall I’m fine with this pick as long as they think he was the best player on the board.
