Padres select LHP Boston Bateman with 2024 second-round pick
The San Diego Padres drafted LHP Boston Bateman with the 52nd overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft.Â
Padres President of Baseball Operations/General Manager A.J. Preller has shown an innate ability to uncover talent in the draft. Earlier on draft night, the Padres and Preller selected left-hander Kash Mayfield out of Elk City High School in Oklahoma.
As shown by the Mayfield pick, the Padres appear to be on the hunt for pitching in the draft. In previous seasons, second-round picks include Joshua Mears (2019, 48th overall), James Wood (2021, 62nd overall), Robert Gasser (2021, 71st overall), and Adam Mazur (2022, 53rd overall).
A.J. Preller has routinely picked players who sign at under-slot values in the first round to use the bonus signing money in the later rounds.
With the 52nd pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, the San Diego Padres selected left-hander Boston Bateman out of Adolfo Camarillo High School in California.
The 18-year-old left-hander has shown a plus-plus curveball and high velocity for his age, peaking out at 97 mph. Here is a look at the young left-hander’s pitches:
The Padres look to continue replenishing their farm system at the 88th overall pick.
