Padres News: Robbie Erlin to Undergo Tommy John Surgery
Terrible news comes out of the San Diego Padres locker room today as it was announced that young left-handed pitcher Robbie Erlin will go under the knife and have Tommy John surgery. A very tough blow for the Padres who have been decimated by injuries early this season.
Padres starting pitching has been inconsistent so far this season. The loss of Erlin means that Cesar Vargas will get an extended look in the rotation. The young Mexican right hander has looked very poised in his first two major league starts. The Padres will hope he can continue to develop in the rotation.

Erlin was an addition to the staff when ace Tyson Ross went down after making his first start of the season. Ross has still not thrown yet and it is looking like he will be out until mid or late June at the very earliest. The staff will lean heavily on James Shields and Andrew Cashner until Ross returns.
Brandon Morrow is lurking in Triple-A and he could be an option if Vargas starts to fail. Thank goodness the Padres have left hander Drew Pomeranz as he has quickly become one of the best pitchers on the staff. The loss of Erlin is rough, but the Padres have starting depth as long as nobody else goes down with n injury issue.
