Padres News: Robbie Erlin Recalled, Matt Thornton to D.L.
The San Diego Padres made a roster move on Friday as Robbie Erlin was recalled from Triple-A and Matt Thornton was put on the D.L. with an inflamed Achilles Tendon.
The left hander Erlin was supposed to start the first game of the season for the Chihuahuas last night, but was scratched for newly acquired right handed pitcher Jeremy Guthrie. Erlin will throw out of the bullpen for now, even though he was vying for a spot in the rotation in the Spring.
The left-handed veteran Thornton will be in a walking boot for two weeks and hopes to return to the team shortly after that. He was signed to a minor league contract over the Winter, but had a decent start to his Spring and made the 25-man roster.
Erlin on the lineup card, Thornton isn’t. He’s headed to the DL.

Erlin has to be excited about being recalled. He was some what of a surprise not to make the team, as he was the only potential starting pitcher to have a productive Spring. In the end the team named Drew Pomeranz as the teams number five starter. If Pomeranz struggles you could see Erlin move into the rotation and Pomeranz pitch out of the pen.
The Padres have left-handed pitching options and that is a nice thing. For seemingly ever the Padres have had minimal south paws on their pitching staff. Having Pomeranz, Erlin, Thornton, Ryan Buchter and Buddy Baumann (when he is healthy) will go a long way during the dog days of the summer.
