The Padres traveled to Houston to take on the Astros in the first of their three-game series.
Kyle Hart took the mound for San Diego while Ryan Gusto started for the Astros.
The Padres came into this game with an MLB-best record of 15 wins and four losses. However, Houston got the best of them in Game 1 of the series.
Tyler Wade opened up the scoring as he grounded into a force out in the top of the second inning to give the Padres the lead 1-0. Houston immediately answered in the bottom of the third inning with a three-run home run for Cam Smith. Yainer Diaz singled home another run to add to Houston’s lead in that same inning.
Oscar Gonzalez stayed hot, driving in a run and cutting the Astros’ lead to two runs in the top of the fourth inning. In the bottom of the fourth, Smith homered again for his first multi-home run game of his major league career to give Houston the three-run lead again.
Gusto finished his outing with a productive five innings pitched, giving up nine hits but only allowing two earned runs while striking out two. On the other side of it, Hart finished his day throwing five innings, giving up five earned runs across 10 hits with two strikeouts.
Luis Arraez hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to cut the lead to one. It was his third of the year, which is incredible considering he had four all last year.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Jake Meyers singled home another run for Houston against the Padres’ elite bullpen to extend the lead to two runs again.
This was enough to finish the Padres as Houston won 6-4.
Manager Mike Shildt spoke postgame about the loss: “Got down, battled our tails off, lots of activity, lots of action on the bases, a lot of great at-bats…. We just ran out of innings,” Shildt said.
The two clubs face off again Saturday in Game 2 of their three-game series. Michael King is set to go for the Padres, and Hayden Wesneski is set to throw for Houston.
The first pitch is scheduled for 4:10 p.m. Pacific Time.
