Padres EVT Podcast: Episode 85 with Jeff Paternostro of Baseball Prospectus
The Baseball Prospectus’ Top-101 Prospects list was just released and six Padres made the cut.
In an effort to keep you, the fans, connected, we brought back Jeff Paternostro of BP to discuss the list.
Jeff first gives us some insight on how the list is constructed. The process is a true art form and it is very interesting to see how Jarret Seidler, Craig Goldstein, and Jeff devise the list each year.
Anderson Espinoza was close to making the list, though he wouldn’t have made the top 120. Jeff discusses the right-handed pitcher and tells us that he still has plenty of upside, but the injury factor was a huge issue in him dropping down the list. We ask about any other prospects that were on the cusp, but no other names were revealed, though Logan Allen, Eric Lauer, Joey Lucchesi, and Hudson Potts are reportedly close.
Luis Urias came in at #74 on the list and we were a little bit surprised. Jeff talks about Urias and why his projection is not that of other highly touted second baseman prospects around the league. He could make his debut really soon, so we will all see what kind of talent he really has.
Adrian Morejon (#50) and Michel Baez (#52) are each dissected by Jeff as he talks about each man’s future in the league. Morejon is difficult to comp, but Baez and his large frame could be a real top-of-the order starter.
Cal Quantrill (#48) and his upside is debated. Jeff gives us some great stuff on the young pitcher and why 2018 could be huge for him.
Mackenzie Gore (#29) was recently drafted by Jim Callis in a MLB Dynasty League, as Jeff reports to us. We all laugh about it, as Callis and his love for Gore is truly infamous. In breaking down Gore, he gives his thoughts on his arsenal and what he will ultimately bring to the table.
Rounding out the list for the Padres was Fernando Tatis Jr at #9. The infielder has all the fans excited and Jeff gives us some info on the young talent.
A great episode as a lot of information was provided on the Padres system. Thank you for the listen.
