Padres EVT Podcast: Episode 67 with James and Patrick
The San Diego Padres’ season is over, but we are still going strong at EVT.
Episode 67 is a continuation from last week’s show where we gave a recap of the 2017 Padres. In episode 66, we spoke about the infield and catching positions. For this week, we finish off the roster by discussing the outfield and pitching staff.
The left field battle will surely heat up in the spring, as the Padres have some options there. Jose Pirela leads the way, but Travis Jankowski, Franchy Cordero, and even Alex Dickerson could propose a challenge to Pirela. We will see what happens here in the spring.
Center field and right field are locked up presently, as Manuel Margot and Hunter Renfroe looked entrenched at each position. Of all the positions on the team, the outfield seems to have the most depth presently.
For the pitching staff, Dinelson Lamet had to be the biggest surprise. The right-handed pitcher came on and looked dominant this year. Patrick and I discuss his ability and debate about the differences between him and Luis Perdomo. Both are excellent young arms to potentially build around.
Jhoulys Chacin and Clayton Richard were productive innings eaters and we talk about each hurler.
What will the team do for 2018 in the rotation? There are options presently with the team and we talk about it.
The bullpen centers around Brad Hand presently. The left-hander had excellent numbers, but nobody really knows what his future is. The Padres could deal him if his asking price is met. We discuss closing options if the Padres are left without Hand.
The depth in the bullpen is great and we talk about some of the names to look for in 2018. Kirby Yates was certainly a surprise and the Padres will probably strike gold again on the free agent market during the off-season.
