Padres EVT Podcast: Episode 64 with James & Patrick
We first discuss the state of the Padres. Are they coming or going? They don’t even know.
The tank talk is strong as the team is still within reach of a top-5 selection.
With roughly 12 games left, the Friars would need a losing streak to gain a top selection. This will be worth monitoring as the season ends.
September call-ups were just made, as Hunter Renfroe, Travis Jankowski, Christian Villanueva, Tim Melville, and Rocky Gale were all recalled from Triple-A El Paso. Franchy Cordero was noticeably left off the list and we speculate on why that happened. The outfielder had a great start to his major league career, but did fizzle out in the end.
Patrick and I discuss some analytics, as he quizzes me on wRC+, which I fail miserably at. There are some real surprises with the Padres’ numbers.
We discuss Jose Pirela and his future with the team. His numbers have been very good and his defensive metrics will surprise you. What to do with him? He has value, and we discuss his 2018 possibilities. A second base return could make him extremely valuable on a daily lineup and we delve into the numbers behind that.
We speculate a bit on the 2018 lineup. It was difficult to make a clear-cut lineup as there are so many possibilities. A.J. Preller has options and he is surely going to make a move or two in the near future. What does he have up his sleeve? Will will see.
We are doing recaps of all the affiliates and speak about the DSL, AZL, and Tri-City team. There is much to be excited about on these squads. Patrick gives us some advanced knowledge on the AZL as we both talk prospects for a while.
Manuel Margot and his future at leadoff is talked about. Wil Myers and his defensive issues is also hit on.
There was a lot of information on this podcast as we talk everything Padres. We close the show by bashing the Padres’ marketing department a bit. It was in good fun. We, very much, want Wayne Partello to come back on our podcast. He would be an excellent guest and should not be adverse to speaking about problems within the team.
