Padres EVT Podcast: Episode 51 with James & Patrick
The San Diego Padres have played some pretty respectable baseball in the past few weeks.
We start the podcast by talking about Sonny Gray. Ken Rosenthal recently named the Padres as a dark horse candidate for his services, and we discuss the pitcher.
Gray might be a quality starter, and enticing, but we both agree the Padres should not dismantle the farm system just yet.
Manuel Margot has been on fire and we talk about his hot series. The opposite of Margot, is the production from young Allen Cordoba. The infielder is in a horrible slump and we discuss his future moving forward.
The infield has been a crowded group. Cory Spangenberg has taken the third base job and run with it so far. The left-handed hitter certainly looks improved at the plate and fans are becoming very exciting with what they’ve seen from him.
Brad Hand is a hot topic and we certainly discuss the pitcher. Will he be dealt? We both agree he should be, and we speculate a little bit on what kind of return the Padres should be expecting for the teams’ lone all-star of the 2017 season.
In the stat segment, Patrick introduces us to SIERA and we discuss the stat that is used to provide analysis on pitchers.
We introduce a new segment to the show in which we answer some questions from the listeners. The 2018-2019 free agent class is briefly discussed, as is September call-ups and whom the Padres might recall later this year. We finally discuss some possible prospects who could start the 2018 season with the big league team. Interesting stuff.
If and when Hand is dealt, the Padres will need a closer. Kirby Yates, Phil Maton, and Carter Capps seem like the likely players to step into that role. We speak about each pitcher and what their role will be with the team moving forward.
The minor leagues are still progressing, as Adrain Morejon was promoted to Fort Wayne this week. The lefty joins an already dominant young staff in the Mid West League.
For rapid fire questions we talk about, Jabari Blash and Travis Jankowski, the Rule-5 picks, trade talk, and the future of Carlos Asuaje.
